Dump It

Dump it and get a programmable one. Crystals are so 1980. :) Seriously, finding crystals for temple may be difficult.

The crystals are tuned to a certain frequency. It would only be beneficial for you if those crystals are the exact frequency (or damn close to) that Temple broadcasts on, which is highly unlikely.

Hell, crystals are way pre-1980. Crystal radio receivers are "SO turn of the century."

It really is cheap to buy a computer programmable scnner these days. Check out what you need (analog/digital, trunking/conventional, etc.) to listen to Temple here (anything in blue is a link): http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?ctid=2536

Then look in the wiki here to see what you need- scanners are on the right hand side: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Main_Page

bobbygz1, I live in Temple, too. I have a BCD396T, but I think you could get by with a cheaper, analog, model. Most of the action is on the Bell County EDACS Standard system. The only P25 voice channels I listen to is Fort Hood P25 system, and TX DPS Conventional with P25 voice. So far, Ft Hood is boring, (they encrypt the good stuff) and so is TX DPS in this area - about all I've ever heard on it is requests for license checks. Of course, if you plan to go south to the Austin area, you'd want a digital model, I think.

If you really just want to listen to the Bell Co. EDACS TRS then I'd go with a regular analog scanner, DPS uses this TRS as well.

I travelled through about 3 weeks ago and I was hearing DPS use mostly the Bell County SO East and West Rural Law Enforcement talkgroups (TGIDs 0497 and 0498). I was travelling the Sunday after Christmas and heard 7 different DPS officers working wrecks between Temple and Belton on both of these. It was a pretty busy system.

Temple, next to the County itself has a BUTTLOAD of Talk groups.

Crystal scanner's are so 1980's? I got my first scanner in 82 and even it was PLL synthesized and programmable. I think Crystals are closer to 1970's .... ROFL!

Well, from 7 to 7:30 this evening, I heard 25 talkgroups. Of course, there are more. I have 198 TGs in one of my versions of that system. That's nearly every talkgroup. I have another version with just the PS stuff. It's a pretty busy system, since it covers Temple, Belton, Harker Heights, and Killeen, other smaller towns, and has some DPS, and VFD, too.

I wish I could hear them from here. I have seen Bartlett VFD using handhelds in Davilla but I just can't pick the system up even with an antenna approx 10 ft. above my roofline in the Thorndale area. I figured if they were using handhelds there I would be able to get something where I am but can't get anything. I can hear some of the old VHF or UHF (can't remember) paging channels sometimes.

I know it's not the same, but you could listen to it on scanamerica.us if you just want to hear the system. Seemed to run about 5 or 10 seconds behind, when I tried it.

actually didn't think about it but I just might do that. I don't mind being a bit behind, I listen to mine over the net while I am at work.
