Scanning Repeater Input Frequencies - Why would you do it?

I listen to the 800MHz inputs on the local LTR system in my area sometimes. Specially for the cabbies home channel, they're always pointing out interesting stuff happening around the area and it's a good way to know what's going on in the neighborhood as well as providing more locally relevant listening entertainment.
