okay, im new to public service radio. im just curious what the "screeching noise is when my local police, sheriff, and emergency mgt. officers key up their radios? is this a repeater function? or a function within the users radio? i have been wondering this, i am a volunteer for my county emergency mgt. and all the other radios have this "screeching" noise when they are keyed up. i was wondering if i could program this into my radios? i use three different radios a motorola GM300 in my vehicle a Kenwood Tk-805D at my house and Tk-840 in my office. i Would really appreicate any help/explanitions i could get. Thanks!

it is probably MDC1200 data burst giving the unit id. i can't remember if the Gm can do it or not, but odds are the TK's don't.

check the programming, but like i said i don't remember if it is capable or not. plus you need a unit id number from the system admin so they can alias you in the consoles. i really don't think the GM had the option to do it, so you may be SOL. due to narrowbanding you will have to replace the GM soon, why not save up for a compatible radio that does the desired signalling?

noise

1st the mdc1200 that is spoken about is used as either a pre transmission or post transmission tone format(Motorola) trademark and what it does is send a radio identifier number that can be seen by the dispatcher or other radios if they have a display so they know who is keying up, however it is not a screeching sound.

You say your a volunteer, check with the municipal radio tech, they may be on narrow band ( the new 12,5 khz) channels or they may be using some sort of voice scrambling or encryption. Encryption (Voice) usually sounds like white noise and digital encryption either you won,t receive or it will just sound like an open carrier with no noise.

hope this helps.
