I am new to SDR, and few days back i received my RTL SDR dongle. However when i run the play icon in the screen (SDR#), there appears to be no signal or station even after plugging in the antenna.

2. I have downloaded the SDR# software which is available in SKYWAVE website.

The download software on the SKYWAVE website is not SDR#, it is SKYWAVE Linux.

Since he stated he hit the play icon, he must have downloaded SDR++ (Windows version)

I am using window(10). where can i find the proper software for window?

Sdr++ will work fine on windows but you never followed up on installing to drivers. Did the driver installation complete? When your hitting the play icon, is your dongle showing up ?

You can download Sdr# from SDR# and Airspy Downloads - airspy.com but remember,
Any version later than v1910 will not work well with the RTL-SDR.

I think for the nooby, first, follow basic installation instructions and then work on receiving som strong local FM broadcast. that willtell you the setu will work.
Your choice of SDR software should have user guides to follow and read that.
First thing is installing the RTL drivers then selecting the proper port and the drivers in your software. the defaults should have you getting something.
You can toss the tiny antenna, they are near worthless and put up some form of decent antenna, preferably above roof level. (Higher is better) run a decent coax like RG-6 then a short flexible run of LMR 174 to the dongle.
You will find noise is the worst obstacle to overcome but this is just the first 'building block' of a good SDR system.
This is a learning curve and everything improves as you progress.
Cheers
I have same problem, but only in SDR++. Same setup works well in other software(s).
I like the layout in SDR++ and would like to try a few recommended uses, but can't even tune a FM radio station.
I do have stuff showing up, but its not the known frequencies I expect.
Also none of it has been audible.
Seems to be something specifically not right in SDR++
Any troubleshoot welcome. (Antenna work well with all other apps)

Photos not available at the moment.
I made the adjustments that match other working software, as well as many others.
I have not found information verifying the compatibility with RTL-SDR V4.
I did however notice that the people that recommend using SDR++ are using RTL-SDR V3.
I'm starting to think that might be the problem.

Did you download the V4 drivers and place the required file in your Sdr++ directory?

If SDR++ isn't working with RTL-SDR V4, you can try these steps:

  1. Download the updated RTL-SDR driver from GitHub
  2. Extract the 64 bit version of rtlsdr.dll
  3. Overwrite the existing rtlsdr.dll with the extracted one in the SDR++ program files folder
  4. Start SDR++

I can only exemplify with SDR Sharper, What I use. Most are basically the same.
Initially there are settings like sound output. If that doesn't default to your OS sound mapper, you need to set that.
Refer to attached images and be sure your SDR drivers are properly installed
In your console, you will find source settings (STEP 1) locate your XTIO for your SDR and click on that.
If it is not in the list, your drivers are not installed properly, otherwise, your tuner control panel will open (STEP 2)
The default usually will work. I have found manually setting the tuner gain gets a littl better reception. (STEP 3)
Now you can set the mode to wide FM and tune a local FM broadcast channel. Press the run button and you should be receiving.
Make sure your MUTE is off, volume slider as needed. (STEP 4)
This will at least show your system is working.
Now you can try LMR, anything from amature to railroad to business. My example is FRS/GMRS channel 1 with my signal generator as source signal. (STEP 5)
Yor spectrum has sliders (hidden ? ) to set the noise floor and top, zoom, and the waterfall has contrast and speed settings.
IF you have the IF window open, you can fine tune signals to the center.
Note, all these panels are resizeable, dockable and pinable and position to suit your preference.
Cheers.

Thank you.
Sdrsharp works as you have stated.
SDR++ (PLUS PLUS) Is a very similar app. For whatever reason, it doesn't function quite the same.
Thanks again for sharing that information.

Several times.
It shows up, but doesn't seem to work as I expect.
I see various signals, but I can't even tune in a basic FM radio station.
Do you have RTL-SDR PLUS PLUS working with RTL-SDR V4?

SDR++ looks to be the same GUI bundled with Airspy HF+ discovery.
As I mentioned in my last post, If you have a grip on running SDR#, this would be easy to pick up on.
I found many of the paneles hide, but you can open those panels from the main menu (3 bars upper left corner)
The operation is quite a bit different, but the same. Tunning an FM BC station. the frequency display at the top
is like a spin wheel. Mouse pointer on the 1 Khz segment an the scrole wheel changes that. same for Mhz etc.
Tic the WFM button in the radio panel, tune your FM station and it should be there.
Let me add my SDR to the airspy directory and see if I can run that.

What fax software are you using with this ? That must be an awful small image to be that fast. Try it with some HF marine fax.
That's RX-SSTV by ON6MU. It's the Black and White mode. Most images are usually small. It is not HF marine fax, or weather facsimile. It is Slow Scan TV. It has automatic mode detection.

The decoded image actual size as decoded:
320x240px They dont' send much larger than this normaly depending on mode. Scottie 2 can take a few minutes. This Black and White mode just a few seconds.

Here is a list of my SSTV decodes with dimensions. You can see they don't send large high-resolution images.

If you want high-resolution images then decode with EasyPal on the right frequency. SSTV is most common.

Here is where I got it
