The best way to listen to CHP is not on a portable scanner at all unless you are so close to a CHP frequency that is on a repeater.

Examples are like the Purple - The Grey - The Green and the Copper works well for SBDCO. The Turquoise and the Beige work well too as they are all on repeaters until you get outward into the Desert communites for the White and The RED. I am able to pickup Ventura Co CHP most of the time from the very south part of LACO. The discone antenna is the only way it works well. Its all about the metal in the sky with a center loaded long whip antenna.

The best antenna is at least 30 feet up high on your roof and use a discone antenna with a center loaded coil and a big whip antenna. That's been the best way for me to receive low band CHP. More metal in the sky the better. As to a mobile in your car or truck a good mag mount antenna seems to work well as your car acts somewhat like an antenna too with a mag mount antenna. I use an ST-2 Antenna but those are not made anymore and are tough to find used. What other great antenna to use is the Diamond Discone D3000N antenna which I have and it works great. Here is a link to the antenna. Actually I split off the antenna too with a powered splitter and use the same antenna for off the air TV channels too. Go Figure but it works great.

Good Luck. This should get you up and running as best as possible for you with monitoring CHP low band for now.

Ok. 30 feet in the air is crazy tall haha! Is that base at home unit 30 feet tall. I heard a good one was the c40 mobile base mount. For like 80 dollars
