You might try ordering from a different source. I always suggest Amazon or Walmart. If all 3 scanners came from Bearcat Warehouse at about the same time, it might have been a bad "batch" of radios that made their way into the Bearcat Warehouse's inventory.

Perhaps, for more personalized service, you might try Scanner Master. Explain the issue and tell them you want your unit pre-checked before shipping. They might be willing to accommodate you, but you will have to check with them.

Sadly, there is no perfection when it comes to consumer grade electronics. Varying degrees of differences between units is more the rule than the exception. And sometimes this is more subjective than objective. I have several 100's and 200's and no unit is exactly identical. For example, the keypads on the SDS200s that I have--- some are uniformly illuminated and others are brighter on one side or the other.

Good luck in your endeavors.

Another option might be to buy a used unit from a fellow scanner enthusiast here on Radio Reference. A unit which, as they say, "has been put through the paces" and has already proven itself. It's a bit more precarious, unless you can find someone who lives in close proximity and who you can trust.

We don't live in a world of perfection--- there are always little niggles; some bumps and potholes in the road. It's just the nature of the universe. I remember getting the first dent in my brand new shiny Jeep. Right in clear view on the hood, likely from a baseball gone astray.

If it's not one thing, it's the other. But it's always something. Enough with the philosophy-- time to get back to some radio listening. Hope things work out for you.

That's not necessarily the case.
Look over on the right side of the Amazon page for 'Sold By' & 'Ships From'

In this case, the sold by & ships from are both 'Police Scanner Outlet'. That is the name Bearcat Warehouse uses to sell on Amazon as one of the Marketplace sellers.

In this case, Amazon is both the seller & the shipper. (This example is from the page for a 436HP)

So you returned a scanner with a dim lower display before you found out if their was a replacement? If not, you have a scanner but you're really hung up on this minor issue. Are you the same poster in the Facebook group and talking about a class action lawsuit? Change it to a color display and you won't notice any minor imperfections.

Purchased my SDS100 earlier this month from Main Trading Company and I don't see any difference between top & bottom screen brightness.

Looks like they have at least 1 in-stock as I type this:

Both MTC and GigaParts are quality high end Ham Radio stores that have good perceptions by the Ham Radio folks and I have bought from both of them. As MTC is a smaller family single store [not a chain like HRO or Gigi] I bet you can ask them to pre-test it for you.

I would suggest Scanner Master but I see by their website they are out of stock. They possess a level of scanner expertise you don’t usually see at the ham radio outlets. (Yes, I’m sure you are going to find the occasional amateur radio counter help that knows more about the scanner than it’s price, but that’s the exception to the rule.) It’s just expected the amateur radio outlets will be more knowledgeable when it comes to ham gear. Scanner Master only sells scanners, accessories and programming services (that I’m aware of).

A disclaimer; Anyone noticing I’ve been plugging Scanner Master numerous times in the last few weeks? True, I’ve suggested that’s the place to shop, but I’m not affiliated in any way, (other than dumping a ton of money there since they first opened). I mentioned them because most times it had to do with a hard leather case for the SDS100 because to the best of my knowledge, no one else makes one.

I never talk about lawsuits. I don’t have time for nonsense.
The dim UPPER display is hard to see. Why should I have to do a work around for a 700 dollar piece of plastic ?

With 3 bum sds100 units I don’t know what to do now. Buy another one or go with a whistler? Or even a unication?

Any advice. I want all the bells and whistles and the most frequency range.

There's a poster in a SDS100/SDS200 Facebook group that sounds very familiar and was asking about starting a class action lawsuit, so I asked.

Just checked Bearcat Warehouse website and saw this:

" THE SDS100 IS IN STOCK AND READY TO SHIP! ".

I don't know what they're telling you or why they're telling you they don't have them?

If you are in a simulcast area I don't know that there is much out there on the market that will compare with the capabilities of the SDS100. Whister doesn't have a scanner on the market that reliablly handles simulcast issues, Unication is a good product and they do work well on Simulcast however they have limitations. If you don't need a portable scanner the SDS200 is a good scanner and works the same as the SDS100 just as a base/mobile unit.

They haven’t updated their website. That’s what I’m told. Bought one from scannermasters will have today.

Glad to here the display lighting is fine with your new one from SM...

Three bad ones in a row from BW... I would have been pretty PO'd myself...
They must of gotten a bad batch of them... Of course that should not have slipped by Unidens Quality Control either...

I know Scanner Master was out of stock when you first looked at them... So they must of just got a fresh batch in...

If it was me I don't think I would be buying a 100 from BW at this time...
