I'm ready to add a SDS200 to my SDS100 and was wondering if anyone knows a authorized retailer who's willing to unbox the radio, make sure it works and has no hum prior to shipping, has anyone found a seller like that? I wonder if the local HRO will allow you to do it. Is the hum issue there as soon as you power on like a 60 cycle AC hum would be or do I need to have it all programmed and scanning a system etc.?

And yes I know, they'll probably try to fix it with firmware/tried to fix it with firmware but if what I read was correct, that all that does it turn off the amp between call, it means that crappy buzzy audio is still added on top or behind the voice call and that's not a fix so trying to find a clean one to begin with.

Thanks all.
Jen

Doubtful you will find a retailer who will do it. They could not sell it as new if they did if the potential buyer does not want it. I would not do it if I were a dealer.

I have an SDS100 and was going to buy a 200 till reading recent experience but I'm curious, what is the logic with putting the ethernet connection on the front of the radio, does anyone know?

It isn't like they changed the design, it's still the same radio. They added filters and Audio AMP turn off in Firmware and a grounding piece. But it is still the same radio that shipped out the first day.

Not sure what you mean by "it isn't like they changed the design".. still the same radio.... I didn't know there was another version and its not what I was talking about. I was simply asking if there was a specific reason they put the ethernet on the front, most items with an ethernet have it on the back, it' just looks terrible there, I wish they at least included a rubber plug if you're not using it.

Now that I can agree with. The activy light is insanely bright at night. I throw a towel over the scanner to block the light to block the strobe effect.

I'd like to see all ports on the front and the rear. Front ports for users with mobile or otherwise hard to access the rear installs and Rear ports for those that like a tidy look without cables protruding out the front that get in the way or become prone to abuse from hitting the connectors with your hands.

I duplicated the front USB port on my 536HP's and mounted a jack on the rear. I can't use both at the same time of course but it sure made a difference with the cable not getting in the way whenever I adjust the volume or operate any of the lower keypad buttons.

I can see the argument to have these jacks in the front or the rear depending on a users preference so I propose both locations with an included rubber cap to block the port from use if the other is being used unless they can be selected in the menu.

Good idea!

I can understand the programming port on the front. But, the LAN has no business on the front. If it is being used most likely it is all the time, unlike the programming port.

THANK YOU, ABSOLUTELY AGREE, it makes as much sense as putting an AC power inlet on the front. :)

You're awesome!!!!! You've found the shielding ok on those two? No RFI ect from your pooter (computer). I'll go order the set.

Dang, I was expecting a response like "some computer place somewhere", not actual links... thank you. (y)
You’re welcome!!

I'm not sure if they will open it for this, but perhaps check with some of the retailers that offer pre-programming such as Bearcast Warehouse.

I got my SDS200 yesterday and I'm pretty impressed with it.
Pros:

It fired right up without any issues. And immediately began scanning local systems. I'm guessing when the DMR upgrade was put in they put my zip code in.
It's a heavy little brick, and I like that. The mobile bracket is solid and works great as a tilt stand. It's not going anywhere.
The display is very nice.
It seems to receive pretty decently. Less stuff needs to be avoided at work than my other scanners require. Work is a huge RFI mess with PCs and LAN cables everywhere, so just a few avoids is pretty impressive. My GRE PSR500 sitting in the same spot needs about 30 frequencies locked out to be able to scan. Its like 6 with the SDS200, and they are mostly VHF and UHF medical freqs. At home, it needed 3, two are the same as two that have to be avoided at work, and one is on a rail frequency that every scanner has to have locked out/Avoided. Nothing local here anyway on that channel.
Analog audio is very clear and loud.
The AC adapter is very cool running compared to most of the others I've had. Unit itself is barely warm after
If I put my ear right up against it, I can hear some sort of slight buzzing, but it's hardly there and not a problem at all. Sounds like when you take a radio and tune in a PC's CPU, but at a very low level.

Cons:

The LAN being on the front is a huge boner. A right angle plug is a help, but I don't understand why it's not on the back.
Digital audio, at least most I've heard so far sounds very "flat", with the exception of a local Connect+ system that sounds really potent and actually "real" compared to P25 and all the other DMR I've heard so far. I have a ton of external speakers and maybe one of the ones with a hotter high end can help out the digital audio response.
I kind of wish it was just a little bit bigger, just for the ergonomics. One with say an inch bigger screen in both dimensions and a larger keypad would be awesome. But it would cost a lot more.

Now I need to start my favorite lists and get it down to my core setup.

It's probably because the SDS200 doesn't receive those frequencies at all. You'll have to play with the filters to be able to receive properly in the VHF and low UHF bands and then it's probably 30 lockouts on the SDS200 as well. Interference from local electronic stuff doesn't magicly disappear if you switch to another receiver.
