serial cable for RS 163?

Would I be able to use the rs232 cable that came with my Icom R2 on the Radio Shack 163? It has a "stereo" 3-conductor plug. It seems as though the USB cable emulates the serial port in hardware so I thought maybe it should work.

I don’t think so. I take it that your cable is the OPC-478 which uses the Ring section of its TRS ("Stereo") plug for both the TX and RX signals.

Apparently the Pro-163 & 164 work in full duplex mode by using the Tip of a TRS connector for the TX signal and the Ring for the RX signal.

It would take a complex electronic adapter to make the twain meet. So I think you would need to get the Radio Shack 20-047 or the GRE cable used for the PSR 300/400.
