• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Start with that thread.

You will have to program it completely. There are some DB imports from RR if you are a premium member. But there is a lot of tweaking.

For P25 TRS you want a G4 or G5. The G5 can also have a separate conventional frequency range it can monitor. You must select the frequency range at time of purchase. It can't be changed later.

These are not scanners, they are pagers that receive P25 very well.

The G5 will do trunking /P25 in the second band as well as 700/800.

The way Unication pagers works is that first off, you need to have all the frequencies from a site/system programmed.
Then you need to tell the pager, the talkgroups you want to listen to.

If you have a Premium subscription to RR, this is easy to do. Got to the system you intend to listen to and download both the talkgroups and trs (trunked radio system) info.

The above said, is if you are programming your pager for a trunked system. It will be different if your intended listening target differs from that.

Like someone said above, it does involve A LOT OF TWEAKING. Hang in there, do your homework, search, ask. The rewards are great.

To answer your question, no.

Just loading your County Sheriff Department, doesn't enable you to listen to what you want to hear.

Sure you can, but, do you?

You want to be able to be selective in your scan, besides, there are talk group limitations.

You can listen up to 64 talk groups on one knob, so, you need to be judicious and choose the most important talk groups to you, to program into those knobs.

Does it starts to sound complicated to you thus far?

It is, for the uninitiated.

Is it impossible, of course not.

You can do it, it takes a while to figure things out.

You need to have a basic understanding of the systems you want to listen to and your chosen pager.

Unication pager lineup offers several pager across different radio bands. Settle on the one you need.

Then study the system you WANT to listen.

Trunked digital systems use multiple frequencies the radio needs to scan in order to give you the audio from transmissions.
The radio listens to a Control Channel frequency, which in turn, tells the radio to listen to the actual frequency where audio is being broadcast, as long as you have the talk group you want to hear audio from.

There's an option to listen to everything and that, is another option you will need to decide on and program, the radio doesn't do anything automatically for you unless you program it, and, as you might have guessed by now, requires you to do your due diligence and study your system and the software needed to program the pager (PPS).
