just bought two 496xt's for my wife and me.
i would really like to use software to program them. i could program them by hand but would perfer not to, been down that road with other radios in the past.
any advice on which is the easiest and useful ?
i am guessing you mean 396xt.Freescan is very good and easy to use also since you are a premium subscriber you can dload the data for the areas you want from the database here and load right into the scanner.Proscan and ARC-XT are other options and they offer free trials of the software.

Programming Your Uniden Scanner - The RadioReference Wiki
This link, from the page above, lists the
available software packages.
Your new scanners come with a programming cable, which requires a serial port. If your pc does not have one (usually labeled as Com1), see this
page.
I primarily use FreeSCAN for programming all my DMA scanners, including the 396XTs. However, I also have ProScan, since it also covers a couple of my older scanners (BC250D and 780XLT). But most all of my programming, logging, and recording is done with FreeSCAN.
