• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hi all. Just have a few questions about the XTL2500 M5 control head. For the remote mount M5 head, can I plug a USB programming cable into the mic input for the remote head. Also for the speaker, can that also be attached to the remote head instead of having to run the cable from the back of the traditional XTL unit. Thanks.

You should have 2 cables on the back of your control head. Blue CAN cable and Red Power/IS cable. On the Power/IS cable there are 2 leads for the speaker coming out. For the USB question I have yet to see a USB to USB programming cable for Astro25 Line. You can use the mic port or the Port on the radio.

OP is asking if he can use a USB programming cable (HKN6184) into the front mic jack. Different people will tell you different things but I have programmed an XTL5000 with the programming cable mentioned above going to the mic jack and into a laptop with no problems. Granted it was a 5000 and you have a 2500 but I think generally speaking you should be ok.

Bumping this thread with some other questions. What is the difference between the HKN6188A vs the HKN6188B remote head power cable. Also do I need to buy an ignition sense cable (GKN6271A) if the remote head power cable comes with it or is the ignition sense cable for the brick itself. Also, if I buy a stand alone brick and then a M5 head and connect them right away, will it work right out of the box or will I need to program it.

It's just the revision. No real difference.

If I recall correctly the head and the brick need to be the same firmware.
No matter what radio you buy, you will need to program it to your specific channels.
