So I was on a ferry with my scanner going from the island to the mainland and a state patrol had his radio and laughed and said we are happy to go encrypted i hope the whole state goes encrypted soon, so my question is is all Washington state patrol encrypted now? also his remark I hope the entire state goes encrypted meaning law enforcement throughout the state, he also told me he wanted all states in the union encrypted then we would be listening to other things till they could, lol find a way to encrypt all, but anyways that last part was a share of this guys attitude, anyways what is the status of Washington state patrol? I haven't heard them lately on my digital scanners in Whatcom, Skagit, or Snohomish county.

I listen to WSP all the time and hear the main channels and car to car channels. No encryption yet, but I don't doubt it coming soon but how soon who knows.

District 7 Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, and Island Co. use NAC of D70 and pick them up on my G5 Pager.

WSP is NOT encrypted - yet.

Just recently, some public figure got national press for pushing all LE radio traffic to be encrypted.
Anyone remember who/when?

When PSERN went live, many fully expected encryption to soon follow.
So far, it has not - I suppose that is only a matter of time.

Encryption is certainly being used currently.
EX: SPD has an encrypted channel they use on occasion.

As to the WSP officer's attitude, while I can understand it (make their jobs easier), there are two sides to the story also.
EX: During the George Floyd mess in Seattle, SPD put out false radio traffic as a ruse, and got under legal scrutiny because of it.

And... radio traffic is subject to FOIA requests.

Lastly, remember, WSP uses THREE(+) systems, depending on location.
Their 700Mhz system, JIWN and conventional (which is P25 II).
The "+" above - they also use (patch to) some local LE systems in areas.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but when I left Washington in 2021, there were several encrypted talkgroups on the 700 side (as seen on Pro96Com). Their Homeland Security unit (aka the ferry terminals) were using one of them.

I'm not surprised, that state trooper said that. He like all officers, don't think public should be able to listen them, which i disagree with. The state police in Washington state On there Vhf system when they switched to P25 they had issues, so adding encryption wouldn't be smart, unless the state added more repeater sites.

I wouldn't count on WSP going encrypted any time soon on the Vhf side. The trunking side, is hole other story. The scanner hobby really is dying. Online scanner feeds pushed a lot Police departments to move to encryption.

As long as we're stereotyping, I guess you should stop getting arrested so often? You know, since Oregonians are all drug addicts and such.
If only the fentanyl was as dangerous as they say, there be less substance abusers, I don't believe in the term addicts, they choose to abuse drugs

All good here in sw Washington, you should have reminded the trooper he/she is your employee, not the states.
Voters need a tighter grip on our employees purse strings

Agreed we are their employer they work for us, however, I got neighbors who rumor have it is into meth, anyways they keep demanding I sell a scanner or 2 to them to know when the cops are showing up, I refuse as it's my scanners.

I know other neighbors who are boozers and demand scanners as well.

i think all channels should be unencrypted so We know what they are doing, but they claim it's against safety or it is to protect others, anyways no more ranting about this, lol

on a side note how many criminals usually use a scanner as Leo claim they do?

Falls in with my thoughts, most criminals are to lazy to get an actual scanner, figure it out, set-up some sdr's, they are dependent on online/app scanners. So not much of a problem of cause for encryption. Services like broadcastify don't allow those type of talk group.

Example, Washington county oregon, they had a plethora of talk group that were not streamed on apps, they were just to lazy or untrained to switch to them. They had no issues using wash a,b,c,d for protesters , win for warrants & drug busts , ect being streamed on apps. Encryption is a blanket for laziness and zero accountability

encryption well to me is a lazy way out, but I know Washington County Oregon well and multinoma, I believe Washington County Oregon is where Gaston Oregon counties are.

however I only know of 2 people maybe 3 that demanded scanners to avoid being around when the police come, for one think if you're using it as for information and information only like I was taught with my late uncle Donnie, then it's all good,

however in like 2014, I had to use my scanner for other things as Leo claimed the gang problem in Grant County made them go encrypted, I called BS and still do.

I still think Macc dispatch should be unencrypted, however, I feel blessed living in an area where I can listen to so much so it's not a worry anymore, lol

as for the state patrol, I never heard them in Grant, Kittitas, Chelan, Douglas, Adams, or Spokane counties
