Guys,

Is anyone hearing the Nobles on UHF ATC freqs. They should be showing up on their way into & out of the CAP.

Listener in Georgia (outside of Savannah) says Nobles in addition to 328.5 are also using 293.3 & 363.9 as A-A. He says all these freqs are Air Dominance Center (Savannah GA) discretes.

Ron heard them A/A 328.500 and 293.300 just for few seconds each time.
Today came in on 293.300 (Old CRAB OPS freq) but their A/A and exited on 328.500 and heard them light up ZDC Montebello 284.700 departing.
They come North and South way West of most of us here so don't get them in transition. They like UHF and don't like the ocean :)

I'm no expert but my understanding is they are setting the TACAN freqs. to display the DME distance between each other on their nav instruments. They call it "Yardstick". Voice comms don't really make sense because of the interference plus I'd be very surprised to learn that it is even possible with standard avionics. Even military, but maybe ? Do you remember the reference ?

Here is an explanation from the sim. world that I believe is taken from real world ops.

I read the article, and it has some inaccuracies. the biggest is that y and x mode use different frequencies, they don't, they just use different pulse pair intervals (along with some other changes) (x=12 microseconds and (I think) y=30 microseconds) (for the TACAN part, the ILS paired frequencies change a little).

Also, in real life I'm, pretty sure you can't use it to get the distance to your wingman, aircraft generally don't (except for tankers and such) have the equipment to reply to another aircrafts TACAN interrogations (could be wrong, who knows)).

Thanks
Joel

Everybody on the military side uses TACAN - it is used between flights in a formation if needed and in the obvious tanker receiver relationship.

Tankers can use TACAN to see how far away the fighters are. Of course - once any aircraft is close to a tanker - all electronics are in standby (otherwise even folks on the ground will see them...in a bad way).

9:50PM EST Not very experienced here, but looking at ADS-B exchange picture of CONUS with military filter on, does it seem a little sparse, even for a Saturday night, or is it just me?

Saturday night in the middle of a holiday weekend. Perhaps some good rest for our military men and women.

Really? I'm pretty sure that a fighters TACAN can only interrogate to get the distance from a transponder.

I could be wrong though.

Do you have any good references for this?

Thanks

...and then follow the link to DME at the end. It is a good write-up.

TACAN air-to-air mode will giver range. It is a coordinated thing, since the units need to be 63Mhz(also channels apart, convenienly).

Additional source: retired USN P3C in-flight technician. We routinely used it back in the day when swapping on-station to prevent swapping paint.

going back to earlier in the thread, while you cannot do voice over TACAN, you can over Link16, which shares spectrum with TACAN.

Helpful?
