"Not cheap" are the operative words. Is it a quarterly publication?

CAFE 81 (KC-10A, 87-0121, 305th AMW McGuire) just arrived at Nellis (in the 1600 hour our time), presumably dragging a flight of Lakenheath F-15s. There was also an E-4B (74-0787, 1st ACCS) out there with a very unusual callsign that must be difficult to hear - should it come this way - TREGO 89. Add a WB-57 (N926NA, NASA) and the table is set for some interesting listening. Another Red Flag exercise starts next week out there - the one with the eight Indian Air Force Sukhoi 30s and two Ilyushin 78 tankers.
Tin,

It comes out about every 2 months--I think the issue price is about $12 at Borders or Barnes & Noble.

I can't find a "Combat Aviation" magazine on the net. I found "Combat Aircraft" though which also sounds interesting. It's a six-times-a-year publication with subscription price 40 bucks a year ($6.67 per issue) through Amazon and 45 bucks directly from the publisher. Huh? I'll keep searching.

Edit: Now I know you meant "Combat Aircraft" since I just found the publisher and their stories in the latest edition are as you described for the Raptor and RC-135s.

Tin,

I really like your new report format---adding the comments on the end of the log. But I bet it takes a ton of time & effort. Thanks though---in my opinion it really enhances the info.

One log puzzles me:

00-9001 ------- 01:04:53.665 C-32B 227th SOF / NJ-ANG (Fm West Coast)

Any idea what unit these guys are? and what callsign they use?

Yes, to the first part. It's a LOT of time and effort to produce that. To do it, I've got to check logs from all over the place to see if anyone else has logged it to get an idea of flight direction.

00-9001 is one of the two C-32Bs owned by that unit - the 227th Special Operations Flight of the NJ-ANG at McGuire. Their other is 02-4452. They usually operate under callsign TERRA but they've also been noted using one-time callsigns. For instance, that 00-9001 was just on the west coast this past week using MANNY 72 for a call.

1147: Just had VADER 03 (C-130H, 89-9103, 757th AS Youngstown) land at BWI, then taxi to Signature Cargo ramp...119.4/121.9 (Once on the ground, I couldn't hear this aircraft. It's the only aircraft in memory that had a transmitter so weak that I couldn't hear it on the ground at BWI. Usually, I can hear a mouse fart in the corner of the hangar.)
Believe I've got another C-130 heading into BWI...trying to ID it.
1153: VADER 06 (C-130H, 89-9106, 757th AS Maxwell) lands at BWI...also heading to Signature ramp....119.4/121.9 (BWI Tower and Ground) (Oh-oh...I don't hear this one once on the ground either. They went to taxiways Poppa, then Bravo, then to Signature. A dead spot? Not usually.)

While listening to BWI Ground Control on 121.9, I heard JENA 106 (FBI Surveillance aircraft) request to taxi to the runway from Signature. He was approved to runway 33R. That was at 1207 and he went wheels up at 1211 w/Tower 119.4. I don't have an ID on the aircraft yet although it should be a Cessna 206/8.
There it is...there's a Cessna 208, registration N732MD in the area. I'm not positive of the association though. Call it only about 75% sure.

Tin,

I figured it was a big effort so I for one really appreciate the time & effort and understand it's not something you want to do all the time.

I thought the Terra callsign was used by the C-32s of the 486 FLTS at Eglin? I heard a Manny 72 a couple of weeks ago on a ZDC VHF ATC freq (132.55 I think) and thought it was one of the E-6s out of Pax. I'll have to listen a little closer from now on

Sunny's

Tin,
From you logs yesterday:

89-0268 SUNNY44 14:17:34.769 RC-12N 224th MIB (Back through area)

In the past I've heard the RC-12s working out in the Atlantic Test Track. They would come up from Hunter and spend a few days at ADW, workm the test Track then head back to Hunter.

I also think some of their trips to ADW are for " show & tell" for Gov't bigwigs, etc.

The used to be the only unit using the Sunny ### callsign but now it's also uses by UC-12Bs out of MCAS Beaufort SC. Your box makes it easy to differentiate them now.

I know I've had a TERRA 22 that was from the 486th FLTS at some point in the distant past according to my (your) callsign database. I'm not sure if that's your entry or mine since I've been updating the original list since first receiving it 104 years ago and have made hundreds of changes/additions. However, the 227th uses it as their primary unit callsign and that particaular aircraft (00-9001) comes to Andrews often using it - but with lots of different suffixes. When they go out on "real" missions, they seem to use the one-time calls. Among the ones I've heard it use in recent months have been MANNY 72, BETA 75, FLOP 71, BURMA 75 and TORN 81.

1255 & 1257: VADER 03 and VADER 06 have loaded up (or unloaded) at BWI Signature and have departed BWI at those times. Both are C-130H types from the 757th AS at Youngstown OH.

I heard MANNY 72 going north from Buffalo on the 2nd and back into Travis from the (Pacific) ocean on the 8th; even got ACARS hits on him. Interestingly, MANNY 55 [E-6B 164386] just went DUE REGARD offshore San Francisco.

Possibly. They are expecting them to arrive there around 1900Z so these two would meet that time frame. We'll find out in a few hours when 372 monitors in the UK start furiously sending messages to each other arguing about callsigns and tail numbers. :)

The only fly in the ointment is that they were expecting callsigns RAMA 32 and 33. RAMA 31 was already there. All three are B-1s.

Yeah they will be buzzing over there for sure. The REAPER 11 pilot had English accent so likely a RAF exchange pilot on board as well.
Guess Scottish bombing ranges over there will be busy this week.

1030 Dover tower 126.350 IRONY 04 (Dover Airbase Flying club Cessna ) says he has C-17 in sight and still looking for the Awacs.
Awacs is SEAHAWK 01 E-2C from Norfolk doing pattern work on VHF 132.425 Dover appch.

Mark, are you showing anything that could possibly be the E-2C? I have one unknown but don't think it's in the Dover area.

Re: SUNNY

Ron,

I think we just discussed this not too long ago, or I might be recalling another discussion with someone else, but there's an easy rule with the SUNNY callsign:

SUNNY ## = RC-12 224th MIB
SUNNY ### = UC-12B MCAS Beaufort

EDIT: first logged SUNNY ### callsign as USMC UC-12B out of Davison on 05.15.2006.

Tony

Tin,
