It must have done some offshore work on the way down the coast. It's just now (mid-1700 hour) getting to Florida.

After I logged off he called Norfolk metro and then Langley metro and asked about wx at KCHS so guess he had to stop for fuel along the way :)
Nice HF work Ron also :) They can come in handy for good info!

1805 local ASCOT 3362 Heavy on Pot appch 128.350 at FL 7k trying to get around weather near Pax.
Mode S showed ZD950 L-1011 Tristar.
1830 Had to shut down for quick nasty thunderstorm cell, power out, running on my backup generator now...works great!

1806: Royal Air Force...ASCOT 3662, Tristar KC1, ZD950, 216 Squadron into the area. He's coming from Nellis.
1809: SOONER 01 (C-20H, 90-0300, 76th AS Ramstein) into the area. [The unit commander must be an Okie. That's the only reason I can figure for the use of this callsign on this bird.]

Ref Below: He sure does Mark. That one just returned to the UK yesterday. Last heard there in Scotland at 1551Z today. At 2158Z he was over Montreal and then I logged him about an hour after that (see above). That seems to be the preferred route to the U.S. now.

Tin,

From your logs today:

01-0040 VENUS30 09:59:56.578 C-40B 76th AS. Thought only the 99th AS guys used the Venus css?

Also, the Mango acft was a new call for me. thanks--Added it to my list.

Your box show me that there's alot of trfc out there that I don't hear--but then again I'm only using one 300-chnl receiver and I don't record anything---so I shouldn't expect too much.

It was fun to be able to tie in my HF stuff with Mark's VHF on Ascot 7082.

Last couple of days & nights the HF propagation has been terrific--almost like the good old days :)

Re VENUS: Apparently not. Both VENUS and PACER seem to be used for training/maintenance flights for whatever's there at Andrews - not necessarily just for 99th or 457th AS aircraft. However, 01-0040 seems to have been loaned at times to Andrews in the past and might be in that status again. Not long ago, it was used for Executive 1F. It has carried the FENDY/SHOGUN/SPAR callsigns along with performing SAM missions - all in the recent past. It's a versatile aircraft.

Yeah, MANGO 65/SPAR 65/PACAF 01 all go with that 01-0065 PACAF Commander's plane.

No matter how many receivers you throw against the activity in this area (I regularly use nine), you can't catch all of what flies in and over this area. It's just impossible. That's my opinion anyway. So much of it moves across VHF ATC freqs that I refuse to listen to most of the time and, if you do, you can't have more than one receiver on it due to the traffic levels in this area. However, yes, it does indicate how much there is overhead on any given day. And how much we miss.

And I just added more to the list above of today's traffic. (1927-2106)

And ref "the good old days"....I used to sit with an HF receiver in "West by God Texas" and copy mil aircraft worldwide. Those types of conditions just disappeared one day - never to return. Listening to the mil HF net was indeed a worldwide adventure. And that was with a random length of almost any kind of wire inside my house tacked along the ceiling.

John,

Thanks for the link to the aticle. Very interesting. Hopefully you and Ed can catch them on their way back if they take the same route home
I suspect they routed thru Canada as did another Coronet flight earlier this spring ..... way up at mouth of St. Lawrence Waterway ....... too far for me if they go back the same way.

Had a NAVY 519 (SH-60) go up the Potomac and then back down again working DCA Helicopter Tower on 120.75. I thought I read a "JA" modex on the tail, but it comes back to nothing. It had the sensor bulb in front of the nose, like on the newer models, and 166519 comes back to an MH-60R, but that's as far as I can get. Anyone know anything more?

Also, JENA 622 (G-V N596GA) arrived and departed DCA. Arrival on the usual 119.85 progression; the departure was rocketship-style and he went to 125.8, so I assume it was an empty leg back to the base at HEF.

ASCOT 3662 heavy was working up from the south on 128.35 to Nottingham, and then requested right to 060 for weather. He was handed to 124.55, and asked for 25 minutes of holding before arrival at DOV because he was over max landing weight. He wanted the hold at 2000' to get it over with quickly.

Saw a Charleston C-17 arrive as REACH 290 at 1827 (119.85>119.3>118.4). He was told he was #2, and I saw a grey UC-35 on final, but never caught a call. Finally, JOSA 759 was inbound over ELDEE with 119.85, and called into 378.1 to give his tail as home-station 84-0077.

JA 519 is indeed a MH-60R from Naval Scientific Sqdn VSX-1 at Patuxent River. All of VSX-1's acft sport the "JA" tail code. They sometimes also use the Pioneer callsign.

Question

Tin,

From your logs today:

84-0103 DILLON3 15:19:01.197 C-21A 103rd FW / ANG

84-0124 DILLON3 14:49:35.452 C-21a 118th FS CT-ANG

Same call with two different acft? Pilot error or software glitch?

I was just waiting for someone to ask.
That's what they put in there. It's a leftover from their last duty station that they keep for old time's sake I guess. I was going to take them out since they're meaningless but the devil made me keep them in just to see if anyone looks at those logs. Thank you.
It also pointed up another error. I didn't submit the change to the database to reflect it's an Airlift Wing now instead of a Fighter Wing. Change made and corrected above.

Still adding to the log above. Just had an unusual visitor for these parts -- SNOOP 56.

Tin,

Just got my copy of Combat Aviation magazine. If you can find one probably should pick one up. They have a great feature on the RC-135s---all of them with some great pics. Also have good article on trhe Langley F-22s with some great pics.

Lots of other good stuff in the magazine---one of the best aviation magazines in my humble opinion--which is why I subscribe to it. Not cheap---but always has lots of good accurate info and great pics.

I for one always look at your logs (and now Mark's) with a fine tooth comb. Looking for idents for stuff I heard but didn't get complete ident info on and also for new calls and idents for my callsign listing. I do the same with Mike's logs from KY and Jack's from FL when they post them

"Not cheap" are the operative words. Is it a quarterly publication?

CAFE 81 (KC-10A, 87-0121, 305th AMW McGuire) just arrived at Nellis (in the 1600 hour our time), presumably dragging a flight of Lakenheath F-15s. There was also an E-4B (74-0787, 1st ACCS) out there with a very unusual callsign that must be difficult to hear - should it come this way - TREGO 89. Add a WB-57 (N926NA, NASA) and the table is set for some interesting listening. Another Red Flag exercise starts next week out there - the one with the eight Indian Air Force Sukhoi 30s and two Ilyushin 78 tankers.
