Army UAV

Guys,

Found this---may be related to the UAV stuff I'm hearing on 123.4:

Shadow 200 is the smallest of the Shadow family of unmanned aircraft systems developed by AAI. It is in operational service with the US Army and US Marine Corps.

Shadow 200 is used to locate, recognise and identify targets up to 125km from a brigade tactical operations centre. The system recognises tactical vehicles by day and night from an altitude of 8,000ft and at a slant range of 3.5km. Imagery and telemetry data is transmitted in near-real time from the Shadow ground control station to joint stars common ground station, all-sources analysis system and to the army field artillery targeting and direction system.

Shadow is in operational service in Afghanistan and in Iraq. By the end of December 2007, it had amassed more than 234,000 flight hours and flown in more than 55,000 missions.

The Shadow family of unmanned aircraft systems is produced at AAI's facilities in Hunt Valley, Maryland. AAI Corporation is a subsidiary of United Industrial Corporation.

TUAS programme

The AAI Shadow TUAS team is led by the prime contractor AAI Corporation with major team members CDL Systems Ltd, Chandler May Inc, Sierra Nevada Corporation, IAI-TAMAM and UAV Engines Ltd. The programme is managed by the US army unmanned aircraft systems project manager's office in Huntsville, Alabama.

Hi Tin,

I did not see it in your SBS log yesterday, and I usually don't look at them too closely, I just scan them for any C-12s that might show up...)

Tony

I've instructed the program to disregard C-12s in the future and to not copy them into the log.

Finally hearing them Ron. At 0902 they came up for radio checks and they do sound like young Army guys.

Nothing here on that SCORE Ron.

I've been listening to that 123.4 freq and it's kind of interesting even though I have no idea of the scope of their comms. Definitely Army though. Heard U82 tell "Top" that he had to take his laptop and move to another location and then announce when he was there.

NATO 09 (E-3A, LX-N90455) operating in the area again. Picked him up at 1106. He's climbing. Lost him from Mode-S at 1122:39 showing at FL 289.
1108: CRAB 57 (C-130J, 98-1357, 135th AS MD-ANG Martin State) with MTN Tower as he goes wheels up...121.3
1109: CRAB 57 to CRAB Ops announces "off at 08 past the hour"...384.1
I've been monitoring these two freqs in the hopes of catching that transport from yesterday with the 92 suffix. He said he was going to fuel up at 0830 this morning but I've heard nothing from him yet.
1116: EVAC 756 (C-21A, 84-0135, 458th AS Scott) w/ADW Twr for landing runway 19R...118.4
EVAC 756 mentions a ramp freeze at Andrews.
These are posted:
AIR TERMINAL RAMP FREEZE. 24 JUL 02:35 2009 UNTIL 24 JUL 03:05 2009. CREATED:
22 JUL 21:36 2009
AIR TERMINAL RAMP FREEZE. 23 JUL 15:10 2009 UNTIL 23 JUL 15:40 2009. CREATED:
22 JUL 21:28 2009
So, EVAC 756 was allowed to land during a ramp freeze. Unusual. Perhaps the "EVAC" status is allowed to override the freeze?

Ref below: Ron, yes, see log last evening at 1750. Had one then and have been seeing them on a fairly regular basis.

The 3 "Ts" (Tin, Tony, Travis) & Mark,

Have any one you heard anything from the VAQ-209 EA-6Bs lately? I don't remember seeing any posts or SBS logs on them nor have personally heard them for quite awhile.

Just curious---am I missing something?

Tin,

Last I heard was UAV-2 telling control that " there are alot of aircraft here so we'll have to wait awhile"---maybe they are deployed to the BWI area? Or maybe at Ft Meade Tipton ????

Early 1200 hour, had someone out in the offshore areas (probably W-72) calling GIANTKILLER many times on 238.1 and 118.125. His callsign sounded like "JOINT OPS 290"
Anyone else get him and any ideas on who it might be?

Heard that too. I would think Ft. Meade. As many times as I tried to get UAV2 out of his call, all I can hear is U82 and U81. I notice the signal strength is good (full bars) but the modulation is fairly low in comparison.

1241: BAF 16...uhhh...BAF 616 (A-310, CA-02, 21 Squadron, Belgian AF) off from ADW. (Heard w/TRACON 118.95 or 125.65 but didn't notice which) and then to 124.55.

I mentioned SAM 60202 (which he's showing in Mode-S) earlier but he's really flying as VENUS 22....had him with TRACON 124.55 at 1247 asking for direct RATTA. Handed to 128.35 where he says he doesn't really have to go to RATTA but could take vectors to VOR/DME....no go - he's sent to RATTA. Says he'll start the approach from there.

1307: CRAB 57 on his way back to MTN...calls CRAB Ops and reports 10 minutes out, 14K fuel and is A-1. Ground tells him to park in D-4...384.1
1310: PIcked up E-6B (162784) heading west (267 degrees) across southern PA. He was due north of Cecil County MD when first picked up - and now north of Baltimore County. At 1328, he's north of Frederick County (about to hit north of Washington County), still heading west across PA
1320: CRAB 57 w/MTN Twr for landing...cleared to land....121.3
1321: GOT HIM!!!! TORCH 92 (C-130H, 94-6703, 169th AS IL-ANG Peoria) to CRAB Ops reporting "off at1715" as he climbs out from MTN...384.1
This is the guy from yesterday that I was hearing on the ground as 92 and suspected it was a TORCH aircraft. He's displaying TORCH77 in his Mode-S transceiver.

Tin,

Yesterday heard them make ref to 123.4 as the " aircraft VHF freq." Have been searching the 225-380 Mhz area to see if they are also using UHF but so far nothing.

Tin,
Mark,

1010 EDT Have Score 87 (sounds like a jet--has that mask sound so poss EA-6B) working DOV approach (257.875) for some patterns then will RTB PAX.

The only thing close I had showing at that time was
161511 Navy UC-12B Huron in area.

Ron, the only one I can confirm is 250.85 for Patuxent. It's their Helo Advisory freq. In fact, it's on our friend's list too as...
APP AM NW ALERT/HELO ADVISORY

The 236.425 and 339.675 freqs I've mentioned before that I had U/I activity on them and I've never been able to ID them. Isn't that 236.425 involved with Willow Grove somehow? Perhaps the A-10s?

That 249.1 freq sounds interesting as an approach/departure freq. I wonder where? I'll have to plug that one in.

Ron, I finally logged a SCORE aircraft today. It's coming up in the next SBS log chunk at 1336/1339.

Tin,

Thanks for checking those. I've put the unid's in my scanner as well.

Score 12

Tin,

Your wrote--- Ron, I finally logged a SCORE aircraft today. It's coming up in the next SBS log chunk at 1336/1339

He's used that callsign before---interesting though that there was no BuNo with that.

Another UHF unid freq---238.8---sounded like a ARTCC or A/D--FlightCheck 81 working unid controller
