No, Threatnet is cute but nothing you would use for real-time chasing. They need a radar feed from one of the providers like AllisonHouse which uses private servers instead of relying on the public servers which get hammered in big events. Costs less than $10 per month, and given the economic circumstances is do-able for their group

I, too was laughing at Reed when he was worried about the phone lines.... We are just starting to watch this season. I also wonder what kind of (band) those radios are they are using...

I just watched the Nov 3rd episode and it was revealed that Matt Hughes had passed away. His death was not related to storm chasing.

Yeah, that was pretty sad news when it came out back in May. Everybody was shocked, and I think it's unfortunate that the show didn't at least make a plug for some sort of support group or something related.

I had no idea there had been a death among the TIV crew until I watched the DVR'd episode last night...

Very sad. He had only been with the group for a couple of seasons but I thought he was a real professional guy with the guts to do what Casey wanted done. You just gotta wonder what in the world went wrong...

Also noticed that there appeared to be another "new" Doghouse vehicle, a Ford Explorer- late model by the looks of it.

What happened to the TIV's original driver, the one who was with Byron forever?

I've been recording the season and just got around to beginning to watch the backlog last night. In episode 2, I thought it was ludicrous that Reed and Chris are "running" around as first responders wearing flip-flops. I know it's hot there, but shouldn't these guys dress appropriately for the life-threatening situations that they are constantly propelling themselves into? These guys really need to take a CERT course. #1 rule - protect your own safety, lest you become a victim yourself. At least Joel was wearing shoes. I think they could all wear sneakers without sacrificing the quality of entertainment.

I know these guys aren't primarily first responders, but they have a fairly high chance of being just that, inasmuch as they go into locations that others are fleeing. And what if they had to run and take cover in a ditch, for example, in the event that their vehicle failed to stay intact.

Someone tell me I'm crazy, or simply a p*ssy.

Very few chasers actually end up being first on scene, so I'd assume a majority aren't prepared.

I made that mistake -- once. It was a local chase on a HOT afternoon and it wasn't even going to be too bad of an event, and I ended up about a mile away from an F2. I was surveying afterwards out in the middle of nowhere and I came across a farmer who wanted to show me the destruction to his barn (it was pitch black so I couldn't see anything.) Needless to say, walking through a pig farm in sandals is a lesson-teacher. I had to do an 11pm live update with the "remnants" still squishing between my toes. so now I always have boots and rain gear in my trunk.
