I just had an odd experience at lunch today. My brother and I left work and went to the local WAWA in town to get lunch and sit in the parking lot like we always do. Today, we decided to listen to the scanner instead of the radio. About ten minutes after we get our food and get back in the car, I hear over a Detective TG on our system....."Do you see that van that just pulled up to..(nameless restaraunt)? My brother and I realize that its the restaraunt across the street and they were watching it for some reason. Then another voice comes over the same TG, which meant there were others watching this restaraunt as well. My brother looks over and two parking spaces to the right of us is a tinted out van but could make out the silouettes of three people looking in the direction of the restaraunt. So we pull out and ride down the street past the restaraunt and come back 5 minutes later to the wawa parking lot. After another 5 minutes I look across the way to the bank and notice a guy with binoculars looking in my direction from the passenger seat of another van. I told my brother that they might run our plates because we just happen to be watching them. hahahahaha.. I pull out of the parking lot again and the van in the bank parking lot pulls out behind me. I decided to be 100% sure that they were purposly following me. I turned down 3 roads and sure enough, followed. I then made a u turn on the last road and they eyeballed as we passed them. I just smiled. Never heard them run my plate. I wasnt interfering with anything. I just happen to be at the right place a t the right time. Its not like they hid it too well. Even if I didnt have the scanner on me, it was obvious. My brother was freaking out. Most excitement he's had since a car chase we heard last year on the parkway. Just thought i'd share.

Just need to complete the picture I have in my mind...

Mind if I ask how old you are? I don't need an exact age...teenager, young adult, thirty-something, etc. would be okay if you don't want to give me an exact number.

34, Why?

Hope I didnt offend anyone.

I found out what it could have been about. Apparently, earlier on this year, a co-owner of the restaraunt was busted for selling out of there. Would they be dumb enough to still do it? After I sent the original post, I kept listening here at work and they were running every plate that parked at that place.

X,

I hate to have to break it to you, but you were interfering. Leaving the Wawa parking lot was a good decision. Returning put you back on the radar screen, thus distracting the surveillance team from the tasks at hand - as evidenced by them now following you through your scenic tour around the neighborhood - just so you could be sure you were being followed. While you were in the right place (to catch the action), your actions made it the wrong time.

The fact that you didn't hear your own plate being run doesn't mean that (a) it wasn't documented anywhere, (b) that it wasn't run digitally (MDT, PDT, etc.), or, more likely, both a and b. Going in circles around the blocks probably warranted a check mark being put next to your plate number...and all for what? Some "excitement"?

Lastly, as to your comments about them not being "hid...to well," it apparently never occured to you that perhaps that may have been intentional on the part of the teams in question.

Good luck (you may need it one day),

Blunt, but correct. Realizing you we're in a surveilled area, you should have

a) stayed put, until you we're ready to leave. (not to return)

b) not lead them on a "curiosity tour" through the neighborhood to see if you we're being followed.

You could have ended up in bracelets, which would have probably ruined you're day.

My final thoughts on the subject..clearly I won't be able to get through to everybody

dgarton,

Nobody is saying he did anything "wrong" that afternooon (as demonstrated by a car stop never being initiated on him and his brother), but I believe that he needs to be aware of any consequences of having this kind of "fun" in the future.

I agree that i did nothing wrong. I did pretty much the same thing that we do every day. Our job is 5 minutes away and we have an hour to burn. We normally don't sit in the wawa parking lot much longer after we eat our lunch. I drove down the same streets as I do every day around that time. If we drive around a bit, we usually end up back at the wawa anyways. We don't like to head back to work until its time to go back or else he gets stuck doing somebody else's work (unloading trucks). Personally, I don't have to worry about that because I'm in the sales dept. So the way I see it, with or without the scanner, I more than likely wouldn't have done anything much different. And Scandal... When I left the wawa the second time.....when the van followed, I was leaving to go back to work. I wasnt toying with them or anything. I was just curious if he was actually following me. If they would have initiated a stop, i had nothing to hide.

Wolf, many times I was the man watching the man watching the man but I never did anything to attract attention. Well maybe once when I discovered I was sitting right behind the car with a subject and a wired FBI agent in it. OOPS!

Here's where your story takes a familiar twist, as I attempted to retreat to a safe distance the same thing happened but I took it right to the wall. I circled the block nearly a dozen times as the agent switched to the repeater and ran my plate, then they all got confused and one asked "Who the heck is THIS guy?" That was my cue to make a bee line out of there as they went back about their now dizzy business! Back home I listened as before, to heck with trying to hear the wire.

Yeah, I was just about your age when the scanner decided to stay home permanently.

RCA "Oh I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now." me too. ........Wolf if thats your routine no big deal they should have known that, but how do you know it was even the law it could have been the bad guys. If they were looking at you it would have been nothin to look at your plates and call in with a secure line. Apparently the 3 guys in front of you werent that concerned. When sittin around watching there are always people that take notice of you we were watchin a subject and people would call in to dispatch with a description and plate number, they would just advise that we were there to repo a car and they knew it.
