Digital

Exactly what scanner should i purchase to hear the taylor county so?

If you are wanting to only hear Taylor SO, you could buy a cheaper digital scanner such as an old GRE PSR 500, a Pro-106, or WS 1040. However, if you also want to hear Abilene PD dispatch, there are a few digital scanners that will work, but you will have to pay for the ProVoice upgrade. Although these is very little to hear in Taylor County, because of encryption, you also have the Air Force base.

Here are the models that allow for ProVoice to be added:

Actually the only things encrypted are a majority of the APD talk groups. AFD is still in the clear, with the exception of Tac-2.
Taylor County SO, the jail, TDCJ Robebertson and Middleton units, DPS, MetroCare ambulance, South Taylor County EMS, all of the VFD's, a lot of aircraft activity, both civilian and military, can be heard, Dyess AFB trucked system, can all be heard.
Also we are close enough to Callahan and Jones county to hear most of their comes as well.
Plenty to hear with a simple digital scanner.

I haven't heard from you in quite some time. I've been following the metamorphosis of PV in Taylor County. I was unaware of all of the other things you can hear there, particularly when APD has removed themselves from transparency.

Yes any of those will work. For now.
Ed,
If/when Abilene does make their move from EDACS/ProVoice to the new P25 system, are you expecting to move to Phase II, or operate the new P25 with Phase I talkgroups? I'm guessing Phase II, since that seems to be the pattern for other similar upgrades.

I'm still around.
PV is on its way out, but I don't have a definitive timeline for it.
I imagine it will follow in the footsteps of Lubbock and San Angelo.

APD is full encrypted, with the exception of PD 1, which is their primary dispatch talk group.
AFD has encrypted Tac-2,
ACU PD is full encrypted.

I am assuming Phase II
Police and Fire are already carrying XG-75 portables and using XG-75M mobiles.

Nevermind i just figured it out
Keith,
For current usage, the WS1040 or WS1065 would work, with the exception of ProVoice. Uniden scanners are the only ones with a ProVoice upgrade available.

But for future use, assuming that Abilene will go to P25 Phase II once the ProVoice system is taken down, you would need a more advanced scanner.

Current model Phase II capable scanners include:
Handhelds: Whistler WS1088, TRX-1; Uniden BCD325P2, BCD436HP.
Base/Mobile: Whistler WS1098, TRX-2
Not a classic handle nor base/mobile: Uniden HP-2

Previous model Phase II (might still be found new in box); Whistler WS1080 (HH); WS1095 (B/M)

Older discontinued units: PSR800, Pro668 (both HH)
These two, plus the Pro18, have an available paid upgrade from Whistler that in effect makes them equivalent to the WS1080, and also adds DMR.
