Can anyone tell me how far do theses frequencys reach i live 25 miles west of Terre Haute over in Illinois and i dont hear a peep out of their system. Am i to far away to receve it? I pick up their conventional frequencys loud and clear like Union /Regnal Hospital talking to the ambulance and also Indiana State Police not sure of the freq. right off hand but i know its not a trunk freq.

Yeah I would say ur just out of range, if u went to an outside antenna u would probably be able to hear the control channel..

I live in eastern Clark County (IL) and my EDACS portable is intermittent at best. My 996T with an outdoor antenna at about 15 feet picks up the system just fine, but I have 1/2 hardline coax.

It really depends where you are, the scanner you are using, the antenna, the weather, and especially the coax. When trying to monitor 800MHz freqs, do NOT skimp on coax. Buy the best you can and you're signal loss will be greatly reduced.

try an antenna amplifier to help boost the gain

Drunyon,
I live in Western Clark Co. ( Illinois ) in Martinsville and i dont receve it at all.
Unless I'm not programing it in right. Still tryin to learn this new scanner so
that could be possible. I'.m useing 50' of low loss RG6 coax. Hopefuly thats good
enough Coax.

Usswood,

Where can a person get a antenna amplifier ? That would be a nice add on to my equipment.

I mapped it, it's 27 line of sight miles, so you maybe to far away.
I bought my amplifier at wal-mart, but make sure it amplifies up to 900 MHz, Circuit City has a Motorola cable amp that cover the frequency range, but it's pricey. It helps sometimes, but I don't really use it. RG-6 should be fine, best option, elevate the antenna.

Oh, and 800 MHz signals don't travel well at all. I cannot receive Jefferson county from my area, 20 miles away. Another tower in the same County is also 20 miles away, I cannot receive it unless I move the scanner around. Rubber duck only. I would also try the back of the set antenna and move it around holding on a control channel.

I agree with pretty much all...especially about the distance 800 travels...I do believe Motorola 800 travels farther than GEs...I got my amp at Radio Shack for something like 10 dollars...but with the Tower of general the east side of Terre Haute it still might be iffy...i mean even if u can hear the CC u still might be missing traffic if ur not able to hear all of the other Freqs as well...u would like it better if they moved back to the old Tower out by the State Line....

Yes, I didn't even do coordinates either, I just did a quick measurement. He could be on the west side of Martinsville, and I did not know the tower was on the East side of town.

Usually, if it covers the town and (county) well, thats is all they are concerned about. Probably not much if any traveling to Illinois by THPD.

One other thing I did is use the back of the set antenna, and put the scanner on top of a bookshelf which worked pretty good to receive Ft Lauderdale in the middle of Palm Beach county.

OK here is matter of fact about EDACS VS Motorola Trunking....
EDACS depends big time on perfect reception of the CC's to decode and track.
Motorola doesn't depend on perfect reception except on digital.
Motorola for some reason on 800MHz seems to propogate a bit further than EDACS, though not very much. But when dealing with how the systems work on the radios and scanners... That small bit helps! Note that this is only on 800 MHz. I don't really have that much comparison data on UHF, and VHF TRS's...

If you really want to have fun, try an comparison of all three basic types.. Motorola, EDACS, and LTR on each band....

Anyway.. Hope this helped expalin some of the "wierdness"

Martinsville (IL) might be a bit of a stretch. You could try a direction antenna (Yagi) cut for 800mhz. Personally, I don't think RG-6 is all that good. Still a fair amount of signal loss. I guess it depends on the length of run you are using.

Thanks for all the info from you all. But like i stated before im not even sure i have it programed in right as im still tryin to figure out the trunking stuff.

i Programed theses Motorola Trunk frequencys into my 898T
For Vigo / Terre Haute Indiana programming it as E2-800 (Motorola Type II 800 MHz)

Frequencies:
867.3750
860.7125
859.7125
858.7125
857.7125
856.7125

and i cant figure out how to program the talk groups

Talkgroups:
VIGO CO FGND 1 3296
VIGO CO FGND 2 3312
VIGO CO FGND 3 3328
VIGO CO FGND 4 3344
VIGO CO FD DISP 3360
VIGO CO EMA 3728
IDOT T-HAUTE SUB 8400
IDOT T-HAUTE OP1 8416
IDOT T-HAUTE OP2 8432
IDOT T-HAUTE OP3 8448
ISP D32 MUT AID3 64976
ISP D32 MUT AID2 64992
ISP D32 MUT AID1 65008

i noticed theres more then 1 kind of Motorola Type trunking system
Which system is the right one to program in?

E2-800 (Motorola Type II 800 MHz)
E2-HI (Motorola Type II VHF)
E2-UHF (Motorola Type II UHF)
E1 (Motorola Type I)

I know i wont receve all of it due to my scanner not beening Digital but
would like to hear the analog side.

and also programed the EDACS ( ED-HI ) system Frequencies and Talkgroups

Channel 01: 855.7375
Channel 02: 856.7375
Channel 03: 857.7625

Channel 06: 855.9875
Channel 07: 856.9375
Channel 08: 857.9375
Channel 09: 858.9375

Talkgroups (AFS mode):

THFD TACTICAL 1 12-040
THFD TACTICAL 2 12-060
THFD TACTICAL 3 12-080

THFD TACTICAL 5 12-120
VIGO CO SHERIFF 03-000
ISP 32 DISPATCH 03-060

Till i know if i'm programing them in right i wont know if i am out of range or if its a programing error do to me not knowing how to do it LOL.

When you put Vigo County Fire in your , you can make the talkgroups a small size , like these : E1-Motorola then put the talkgroups ,

000-6 Vigo County Fire / Firegrounds
600-15 HMA-1 / Mutual Aids
100-0 Indiana State Highway Dept.

Thats Cool !
