Good evening I saw the latest update on the AIRS system, and a new GID 32980 for Marshall-Boaz-Police. I’m sorry to be slow on programming. I’m not sure where this talk group goes. Again, sorry I’m a slow learner.

It's listed in a separate "Marshall County-Boaz department.

But that doesn't really matter, since it's also tagged as full-time encrypted (the DE in the mode column).

Thanks much I don’t know what the mode yet knowing my luck the 996P2 doesn’t have that mode.

The mode; "DE", means transmissions on this particular talkgroup, are encrypted, meaning, you won't get to hear any intelligible audio at all.
No worries, no scanner ever made can "unencrypt" it.

The D in the mode column indicates that the talkgroup is P25 Phase I, which is what many of the talkgroups on the AIRS use as well.

Other talkgroups, with a T in the Mode column are using P25 Phase II. If you have the AIRS system programmed correctly, you would be able to monitor talkgroups regardless of whether they are tagged D or T.

Except, those talkgroups that also have a capital E alongside either the D or T are encrypted (scrambled). NO scanner, no matter the model nor how it i programmed, is able to monitor encrypted talkgroups. Period. It's against the law, and no scanner manufacturer would even attempt to make a scanner that can beat encryption.

If you review all of the talkgroups on your statewide system, you will find a few like these:

The lower case e means that encryption might be in use, but not all the time. During those times when encryption is not being used, you would be able to monitor activity. However, the agency might then switch to encryption at any time, in certain investigative or tactical situations. When encryption is in use, you would not be able to hear what was being said. If & when they turn it back off, then you would be able to monitor.

You program the system. If you program the system correctly, the scanner will monitor the unencrypted talkgroups, regardless of whether they are tagged D or T.

Just to clarify, if you right click the heading of the “Mode” column, a window pops up with all the meanings of what is shown. An upper case “E” means the entire system is encrypted 100% of the time. A lower case “e” generally speaking, means not all transmissions are encrypted all the time. Some groups within the system may be encrypted all the time and others not, or as the previous post indicated, a group may turn encryption on or off when it’s deemed necessary. The newer scanners are supposed to ignore encryption outright. When an encrypted signal is recieved, the scanner is supposed to ignore it entirely and resume scanning. While this works with the more popular forms of encryption, it’s my understanding not all forms of encryption are recognized by the scanner and the unintelligible audio is treated the same as an unencrypted signal, meaning the scanner will hold on that channel and you will hear the encrypted signal. You can do a UTube search for what an encrypted signal sounds like.
