How fast is the connection between the two units? Is there a large delay?

The usb hub quality could make a difference too. powered vs. unpowered, too many devices on the hub, usb speed, etc.

I am not using usb hub the remote rtl is in linux running computer

Are you using WiFi, or Ethernet? I use rtl_tcp all the time, and I know you need around 48 mbps (megabit) or 6 MBPS(megabytes) per second to pull a full 2.048 msps on a dongle, would presumably be higher if you use a 2.4 msps rate or lower if a lower one. The 6MBPS has been my own personal observation, and its run on 1000Base-T Ethernet, so plenty of overhead and very stable connection. I have also similary observed very poor performance using rtl_tcp on WiFi for obvious reasons, i.e. signal, speed, loss of packets, the wind blowing, etc.
