• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

TK-2180-K2 - check model name and market code

Hello all.

I'm afraid this is yet another " Check model number and market code" thread.
I have read, and re-read several threads on the subject,
but many are so convoluted, and refer to other models.
I cannot interpret the definitive answer if there is one.

I am using KPG-89D v1.61
I use it regularly with success on another TK-2180 I have.
I have Model Information set on TK-2180Portable 136-174 MHz and it shows FleetSync by default.

The problem child:
A TK-2180-K2 I just bought recently.
Appears to be operating perfectly as is
.
Here's what is on the back:
On the silver sticker: TK-2180-K2
then on another sticker (white) with 2 bar codes it says: TK-2180 019048 156174
On yet another small sticker with no bar code, it says: 036/06/123046

- Can anyone give me a definitive answer on this issue please?
- Also, what button sequence on power up shows the Firmware version?
- How do I determine the checksum & what is the latest Firmware version released?

So, so many questions, but I know many industry experts are here and eager to help.

Thank you all for the enormous help you've given
throughout the years.

- Mike in Oregon (yeah, a longtime ham)

Does it say anything during boot up?

Tools, transceiver information, does it give you any info?

Oh, one other tidbit:

When I power up the transceiver holding
the PF button above the PTT, it shows
E 1.04.00 for an instant.

Presumably that is the FW version.

UPDATE:

Grrrr.

I jumped the gun by posting here.
Should have done a bit more research.

That 'E' means Euro Model.
It uses KPG-92D CPS for European Versions.

The '92' works just fine.
Don't ask how fast I acquired the SW.

One oddball thing is that the wide/narrow options are this:
Wide 4K, Wide 5K and Narrow.

I want to find out what exactly they mean by
seeking a SM or Brochure on the web.

I am sitting here right now listening to our local NOAA on 162.55 MHz
Sounds perfect.

The mods can probably close this thread.
Hopefully it's useful to someone else with this "issue".

WIDE 5k - The normal 25 kHz bandwidth we in the US refer to as wideband (5 kHz deviation)
WIDE 4k - Not really used on VHF/UHF here, but I have seen it on 800 MHz. Its 20 kHz bandwidth / 4 kHz deviation)
NARROW - This is the usual narrowband, 12.5 kHz bandwidth / 2.5 kHz deviation.

If you have a copy of K (US) firmware, you may be able to flash it back to KPG-89D software.
