To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have recently acquired a TK-5820 P25 UHF 400-470 mobile ransceiver. I put it on the service monitor and it is showing almost 1KHz of frequency error. It was new old stock and in the box. While I am quite proficient of Motorola alignments, this one I am not. Can someone enlighten me on the proper procedure for this? I have the proper software and an R2670B for a service monitor. I see the auto-tune function in the software, but it isn’t quite making sense. Thanks

I'd recommend getting the service manual. It's got step by step procedures on how to align it. You should be able to find the service manual out there on line. If you absolutely cannot, I might be able to find my copy and drop-box it to you.

I reread op post ...auto tune...
set your signal generator to proper rf frequency...give it 1uv or better carrier signal....hit start in the radio software program.
takes seconds to do...
you may see the frequency slider move up and down then stop...
I think then click Save or ok ( Im not looking at program)
Should be done...
then you can go and recheck freq as you did to start with

I think that might be the problem. I wasn’t putting out enough signal strength On the sig gen. I will get it set up and do it again this afternoon and report back. Thanks

-80 or -90 dBm is the usual recommendation – basically enough for a stable RSSI reading. The TK-5820 manual says -20 dBm, which seems like a bad idea (and 30 dB more than my trusty R2670!) unless they deliberately deafen the receiver in this mode. It wouldn't be the only instance of a 30 dB mistake in a manual, Kenwood or other.
