To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

My mistake, thank you. It is oval as you describe. I assume all the radios with this faceplate would be the same, 7180, 8180, nx800, nx700, etc.
The NX-x20's T07-0785-25 looks similar but I don't know what the diff might be. MSRP is a mere $33. :(

On the KAP-2 board you would put the jumper on pins 4 and 5 of CN1 on the circuit board. Don't short the green and brown wires on the molex connector.
Thanks.....When the KAP-2 board is installed (I have no need for it), that header is already in use. The photo attached is of an 8180 w/o compared to the 7180 with the KAP-2 board installed. I'm tempted to remove the KAP-2 connection and borrow the jumper from the 8180 to see if the speaker comes back.

I did unplug the connector for the 7180 and replaced it with the borrowed, jumped header as you show here and the speaker works fine,

Great. Shoulda worked with the KAP-2 in place but maybe someone jacked with it. Use the two pin jumper from the KAP-2 for your speaker connect on the radio header and toss the rest. When I install a KAP-2 I zip tie the unused connector inside the radio just for these occasions.

I don't have any 6-pin connector like this laying around, I may try to jerry rig a jumper using a small piece of wire and the connector that would have gone to the KAP board. And just remove the KAP-2 board from the radio,

Was my volume down? On the KAP-2 there are two small jumpers. Pull one of those and use it to bridge 4 and 5 on the radio. Done.

I hadn't thought of that....I'll see if that jumper will fit. Sadly, when I said the speaker worked fine with the jumper, it was only the speaker volume tone. When I tried an actual signal (NOAA) the audio was very scratchy. Something else is fubared. Sorry for this to drag on, I'm back to using the EXT SPKR jack. The speaker might still be bad, but it sounds more like there is a problem with the audio output to the speaker. Ugh...double ugh. Sorry if I'm beating this to death. I have comparative audio files, but RR won't let me upload them apparently.

Does the audio sound better through the external speaker?

If it does, then look for debris in the speaker cone.
If it doesn't, and NOAA usually comes in clear at your house, it might mean that this old radio needs an alignment.

Yes, strong NOAA here from 2-3 different stations. And yes, the audio from the ext speaker jack is perfect. I haven't detached the front yet to remove the speaker and look at the cone....I'm a little leery of the ribbon cable. The front of the radio had quite a bit of debris in the speaker opening....train crud I suppose. If I feel lucky I may detach the front so I can have a look at the speaker cone itself. Thanks.

Wise to be wary of ribbon cables.

Not uncommon for the speaker to get boogered up with dirt or rail dust and sound like utter and complete crap. You might be able to suck some of it out from the front with a vacuum, or use a strong magnet wrapped in a plastic bag.

I, too, am going to bet on ferrous debris having penetrated the fabric on the inside of the speaker grill/opening and collected on the speaker cone. I carefully use fingers, parts brush, and a magnetized flat-blade screwdriver pivoted off the edge so as not to touch the cone. Probably will need to remove/replace the fabric sheet, too.
