TK-790H Question

Now onto the next issue...I can't hear the repeater coming back to me on this radio, but I can on other radios. I can get into the repeater just fine with the radio and the PL isn't needed on RX, just TX. Switching the coax between Radio A (TK-790H) and Radio B (NX-700) isn't feasible with ease and I can't put up another antenna.

Can you hear anything on the radio? Program in a NOAA frequency and see if you can hear that.

KCH-10 head has a built in speaker, but needs a jumper on the back to make that speaker work. It's the square 9 pin connector. You'll need a jumper between pins 3 and 6 to make the internal speaker work.
KCH-11 has no built in speaker and will require one.

Jumper wire is installed. This used to be my mobile rig. I can hear our local Fire Dispatches for the county along with the next counties Sheriff channels just fine.

I can hear other repeaters come back to me just fine too. It's just this ONE PARTICULAR repeater it seems. Yes the frequencies for it are correct too. It's 147.195+ PL 123 so simple stuff! 147.180+ PL 88.5 works fine but that's a ton of miles closer too!

Could be an alignment issue with this radio.
Could be the repeater has it's deviation set low.
Could be that the repeater is down, or not hearing you. 110 watts may not overcome other issues.

If it works everywhere else, my money is on an issue with this particular repeater.

Repeater is definitely hearing me because when I A/B between the TK-790 and the NX-700. I get full audio back on the NX-700...So could it be an alignment issue with the radio, despite just coming back from a trusted shop? IIRC there was something funky with the 790's that you had to change to get ham to work 100% right at one point?? It's been forever since I had to worry about that or fiddle with this radio.

OK, that's a good clue.

Double check your programming. Yeah, I know, you already did. Check it a third time. Make sure you have the PL set as 123.0Hz, and not DPL123. Make sure it's set for wide FM, not narrow.

Did you try it in carrier squelch?


If the radio works fine -except- on this one repeater, that likely means there's a repeater issue (likely ruled out with the NX-700), or a programming issue in the TK-790. Probably a few other things, but those are the two easy ones.

This is how I have it programmed into ALL my radios, works fine everywhere else. I have noticed one other machine 147.315 is not responsive and that is a much closer to me machine and I can get into that with the NX-700 as well.

Just for kicks, try selecting the "Beat Shift" option. If it's an internal oscillator thing (aka: birdie), that might fix it.

Beat Shift didn't do anything for me in picking up the repeater.
