I have a 830 which I can key up a repeater and hear a slight bit of noise in the background. If I turn on the Inversion it lowers the audio being transmited and amplifies the noise turning it into full blown pops and crack. I can turn the inversion on and off during the hang time and clearly see that the faint background noise is being amplified. The farther I get away from the repeater the worst it gets. Why would the chip be amplifiing this?

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Actually, my experience with voice inversion is minimal. However, I know that it will make your audio go sideways (highs are lows, lows are highs). Maybe this is raising the noise level as a normal byproduct of the inversion process. Comments?
I've never seen a voice inversion chip do this. The only thing a voice inversion chip does, like someone in an earlier post said, is flip the frequencies of voice. So I have no idea why the chip would be amplifying anything. I can tell no difference from voice inversion on or off excpet the fact that my voice inversion chip makes voice higher because of the frequency of inversion.
I'm just thinking, if the scrambler is in the discriminator audio chain, when receiving a scratchy signal, wouldn't it take the high freq component above 3k that would normally be filtered out and flip it to a lower freq that could be heard as crud coming out the speaker? Is there any filtering on the board?

My 7180's and 2180's do the same thing. The more noisey the signal is, the more "tinny" it sounds. I also notice when a received carrier drops the reverse burst sounds like a click. I have learned to live with it. It sounds bad enough that I would not want to use the inversion full time.
Do you have the compander on? From my experience voice inversion has worked better on the TK-863G with the compander turned off on every channel.
