Interesting. While there is no mention on the type of system they are building out, I would have to imagine its probably a P25 system based on how many channels they have currently. They mention the calls for service, so I assume they are concerned about capacity issues with Ocean County. Going off of both of those assumption, I don’t know why they wouldn’t just build out a site off of the county system like Jackson.

Edit: found this article Toms River to pay over $13 million for new radio towers for police.
Seems to suggest that using Ocean County’s P25 would mean using Ocean County for dispatch which Ocean County declined because of the call volume…am I reading that right?

It’s all in the FCC license:

RESOLUTION Of The Township Council Of The Township Of Toms River, Ocean County, New Jersey , Authorizing The Township To Utilize State Contract T-0109, Vendor #83909, To Purchase Motorola Radio Communications Equipment And Accessories For The Police Department, From Motorola Solutions, Inc., for the 700/800 MHz P25 Radio System, In The Total Contract Amount Not To Exceed $8,690,489.20

"The reason for the project? The Federal Communications Commission has informed the township that the agency is claiming Toms River's current radio frequency. That means the township must switch to a new frequency by the end of 2023."

Lolwut? The T-Band giveback was killed off in December 2020, well before that article was published. By all means, get off T-Band to avoid ducting and go to 700 to encourage better interop with the county, but to continue to cite a nonexistent mandate as the reason is a bit silly.

Anyway, as @elias1988 points out, they've had the SY license for quite some time now.

Note that their current license is in the process of being modified. Two of the sites are going to be swapped out with alternate sites. Ultimately it will be a 5 subsite, 6 frequency P25 TDMA system.

One of the sites will be at the NJDOT yard on Route 37. Going to use the NJSP tower and NJT shelter to house the equipment. This has been one of those on again, off again projects. Guess the state and county systems were not going to meet their needs

The attachment in the application states the foundations for sites 2 and 4 will be constructed this month along with the new tower foundation and dispatch center to be constructed.

Does anyone know if Toms River Police/Fire has laid out their 700mhz freq plan ? As of now, fire is still using VHF. EMS still has their UHF in operation.
Should be getting closer.

I'm scanning the 700 mhz frequencies right now on my SDS100 just to see if I hear any control channels noise or anything else and nothing yet. I see them working on the new site they built this past summer that just off Fischer Blvd.

Location 5 is now in the install phase. Needed approvals before work could be started.

Tom’s River is Ground Zero for tropo ducting. Located on the Ocean and the Bay and the mainland , this is the perfect location for tropo. It is also located between NYC, Long Island and New England to the North and Baltimore Washington to the South. All with overwater paths. There is high demand for spectrum in this region as well.

As the State found out this summer, it is very possible for Tropo to shut down 700 P25 Trunking radio systems.

I regularly receive Maryland FIRST and Rhode Island RISCON during tropo. I suspect Tom’s River will too.

Using the nifty RR DB, I found a few co-channel that may be of interest. Four of six Tom’s River frequencies have co-channel, one with a control channel on it.

FIRST (Wicomico Simulcast) 128 Miles CC 774.71875

DC.Metro.Transit P25 Simulcast, 155 Miles 774.71875

FIRST (Montgomery) Simulcast 160 miles 772.24375

FIRST (Charles) Nice Bridge ASR 180 Miles 773.48125

FIRST (Knoxville) Miller Ave, 190 Miles 773.48125

I'm late to the party, but have also seen this in articles/public documents as the reason for vacating their VHF channels as well. Doubling down on the misinformation I suppose.

Makes total sense to get off TBand, and consolidate town services onto one system but be honest don't make up reasons.

Any updates on proposed trunked system for Toms River? Is the entire township going on it PD/FD/EMS/DPW? Or just PD.? Last I read they were supposed to be off their current frequency by the end of 2023?

Its still in the build phase. Hardware is somewhat in. Some sites need to be powered up and tested.

I'm not getting anything on any of the frequencies they are licensed on yet.
