• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Not on that radio. Don't they use the same stupid antenna connector as the 7550? I seem to recall that. You need the ridiculous "adapter" for connecting the radio to a service monitor.
You're right. For that price they could buy a used mobile...of course they can't "walk around their house and transmit". Something tells me they aren't in "public safety" as in my 30 years I've never encountered a PS subscriber with this need. Whacker detector going off.

One thing that hasn't been suggested is to simply stand by a window while transmitting. Glass should provide the least attenuation of the signal. (But some window glass does have metallic coating for tinting or to increase heat insulating ability which might be a problem).

I've got a fairly distant repeater to my south. The only place in the house where I can access it with my handheld is by standing next to the south facing window in my laundry room.

Since you don't know where the repeater is, try the radio standing at windows on different sides of the house. See if that works.

Adapters are a few bucks. Do you really NEED to walk around talking on your public safety radio in your house? Doubtful. Put the radio in a place where it can get in with either the rubber duck or an external antenna, leave it there and crank the volume.

I don't know to many public safety folks who need to walk around and actually TALK on their public safety radio system from home. They usually have to do that en route to and on scene. Just saying, sounds a little whackerish.
You're kinda right, i don't need to walk around and talk on the public safety frequency but I do need to get acknowledged for the call.
The dispatch puts out the call and the units need to answer the call with their unit numbers so if I can't transmit I can't respond to emergency calls.....

how big is your house you can't take 2 seconds to run outside and acknowledge are you on a timer that requires you to answer in 1.0 seconds of tone and are you required to answer in unit order?

Then your system you are using is not designed for in building portable coverage. So, options are:
-A fixed station with an external antenna
-Call in your response via telephone to your PSAP

Get a mobile, hook it up to base antenna, a mobile with bluetooth capability, now you've got your coverage and household mobility

I actually bought the RLN6554 so that I could place my portable and still be able to transmit. It seems to be working pretty well.
Which base station would you guys suggest for an XPR 3550e VHF?
And Is there an XTVA type for an XPR?

Its XPR3500e not a 3550e

If you need analog, get a CM300, if you need digital, get a CM200d

No the 3500e doesn't support an XTVA
