• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Trying to have "private" communication.

So which one of these is correct?
Both. The Duplex dropdown list can have an empty blank space at the top or "none" like the Documentation shows. I don't know if that is an undocumented recent change, a bug, or depends on the CHIRP version, operating system it is installed on or some other reason.

I use the pipx installed version (released today 20251205) on Linux and the Duplex dropdown list has:
[empty]
-
+
split
off

I think it used to have "none" but that was a long time ago on a different Linux distro. I don't know why the hell they don't change it to "simplex". CHIRP does several things differently.

I only wanted to clear this up as a buddy is coming over over the weekend and we're going to use this to program a couple of his radios and see if it takes the tones from Chirp here. I guess by the time it's over I'll at least know a little more about it than I do now. Frankly it looks like a lot of other programming (ham type) stuff out there or, at least to me it does. But ya, I don't know why they don't put "simplex" or something else there.

Obviously the documentation is not 100% accurate. I had read what you posted before but "none" wasn't an option here.

Again thanks.

Testing 2 Fengs here over the weekend, (sorry just now got around to posting due to doctors appointments) Using chirp, the two radios worked as expected on MURS, GMRS, and the ham bands. I ended up using his Windows laptop the adaptor from my Mac didn't seem to want to work for the USB C to A connection for some reason. We put a PL in one radio and not the other, and just for good measure put a different pl in the transmit to test radio, and the receive radio did not pick up the signal until both radios had the proper PL tone in it. These radios were both older so I did not have the opportunity to try a newer one to an older one.
I'd like to point out, that when the radios were right next to each other it didn't seem to work as well and some popping in happened I surmise due to front end overload. Once we got them 25-30 feet apart, all was fine.
