To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Tytera TYT MD-UV380 odd behavior, help request

Hello all, I have a strange TYT MD-UV380 issue, looking to see if anyone has seen this or has advice.

I got the radio from a friend who was frustrated that it was not working. It is a later "V" firmware model, but it's still pretty old.

Anyway, after much testing, I found that the programming was not controlling the frequency correctly. No mater how you program it, it will only transmit on 150mhz VHF or 450mhz UHF. Even with trying to wipe the code plug, update the firmware, etc. same behavior. I have another base station I tested with and no matter the programming, it will only Tx/Rx on 150/450mhz; very odd. However, using 450mhz, I was able to play with pi-star and DMR; it all seemed to work very well with brandmeister right from the start.

I loaded openGD77 (following all directions, donor firmware, 16mb firmware backup, etc.) and I get different behavior. Now the analog side seems to work as expected (I hit all my local repeaters), but now DMR does not. I've verified that it's transmitting something that sounds like DMR, but the pi-star doesn't recognize the DMR packets (doesn't even log anything). The Green Rx LED on my baofang 1701 lights up, but it refuses to recognize the DMR and decode the audio. The UV380 will pick up traffic from the pi-star and simplex from the 1701, but the UV380 Tx seems to have some kind of problem. I played with timeslots, frequencies, color codes, etc. no luck. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is if I can put my 1701 in some kind of promiscuous mode to receive all DMR to check if the UV transmits any sensible. I was able to revert the UV380 back to the stock firmware, and it reverts back to the old 150/450mhz limited behavior with DMR working.

So I'm just fishing around to see if anyone ever saw something similar or had any advice on how to troubleshoot.

Any suggestions? I'd prefer to have this working in openGD77/DMR mode even if analog doesn't work.

Thanks!

Be aware that codeplug corruption or codeplugs for different firmware/cps than you have may cause weird things to happen. Reset and try with basic codeplug for the firmware and cps or program from front panel. I don't have the radio but try reflashing factory firmware. This thread may help

Thanks, I'll give it another try.
The radio exhibited the 150/450mhz Tx only when it was given to me. Based on what I've observed, I don't think what I did made anything worse.
It does seem like this is a memory corruption of some kind. Very odd that on stock the Tx is locked and DMR works, but the opposite problem on openGD77.

Thanks

Ah, no change. Turns out I already had that firmware. But I went through the motions again to clear out the code plug, reload the firmware, etc. Same behavior ... radio will only Tx on 150/450mhz, nothing else.

I went back to the openGD77 firmware and I have the same observation as above. DMR seems to transmit, but nothing recognizes it's signal. But analog seems to work fine.

Any other thoughts/suggestions appreciated, but unless anything else bubble up I think I'll relegate this broken radio to another analog handheld.

So now I have slightly different behavior, maybe something likely to pick up on the opengd77 or pi-star board.

As indicated above I reverted my firmware and experienced the issue with locked frequencies. After I re-loaded opengd77, I still cannot hit my pi-star, but my DM1701 with opengd77 gets the UV380 simplex.

Hmm, I have an older tyt MD-380 I can play with, I'm going to see if I can get simplex there now or not.

I hope I am understanding your issue right. If it were me, it sounds like the radio has not been unlocked. If it’s only transmitting on 150 and 450, it may never have been unlocked. Try YouTube videos on unlocking the radio. I think it might be two side keys while turning the radio on. Ham radio 2.0 shows how to do it. Good luck!
