Hi All..I downloaded and installed the latest version of UltraVNC on two computers. The one I click on UltraVNC viewer with View, listening mode only and the other as UltraVNC Server. It said that it uses port 5900 so I went into my router and added port 5900 when I couldn't get it to connect. When I try to connect with the viewer computer a box opens and wants to know the host:display or host:port I have put in port 5900 and also the IP Address of the computer that is running the server but it still fails to connect. On the server computer I try to add a client but don't know the Host name and none shows because I can't get the client computer to connect. I set the settings in the firewall on both computers to allow TightVNC to go throught. What do you have to do to get this working? I did a search and others talk about using it and that is where I got the idea but no one says how to set it up..I am doing something simple to keep it from working but can't figure out what..Cheers..Keithmj

First of all,
1. Are you connecting to a computer on the same physical network or are you connecting to a computer through the internet? (Two different locations)

2. What Operating Systems are on these computers?

Do you have to use VNC? I suggest LogMeIn for the less technologically savvy. It's free and works great and is incredibly easy to install.

I am using WinXP on both machines and both are on my home network. Just to let you know what I am trying to do. I purchased a couple of thin clients to run my scanners through and haven't received them yet. A person in another forum said after he set his up thin cient he use UltraVNC to control his thin client so I thought I'd try that but wanted to learn how to use UltraVNC before I installed it on them to get the hang of using it first before I tried to do that. I will be removing the monitor and key board after I set them up so I wanted something so I could see what was going on or to make any adjustments to them. I have never heard of LogMeIn but will check it out and if it will let me see the desktop or control the thin clients then I won't need UltraVNC..Thanks for the replies and I hope I can get this going..Cheers..Keithmj

Hi..I am trying LogMeIn..It is a nice program but in order to control the two thin clients I would have to install the PRO on both of them and it would be $79.00 a year. No cost effective since I would not use it that much. I can use the FREE to see the screen so I can see what is going on but to do anything I would have to reinstall the keyboards and the mice. It would be nice to have the PRO machine controling the FREE but it is the FREE that controls the PRO, or PRO controlling a PRO. I would still like to figure out why UltraVNC won't work..Cheers..Keithmj

Hi..I got it UltraVNC going..Dummy me I forgot to start the service. Then I put the 192.168.1.105 for the port and it asked for the password and it started right up..Just to let you know that I am on a home network. I can run the server on the thin clients and the viewer off of the main computer and it is alot cheaper than LogMeIn. I'll send UltraVNC a donation for the nice program..LogMeIn is a very nice program if you need to control or transfer files all the time and I would suggest trying it. I'll keep using the FREE..Cheers..Keithmj

I currently use RealVNC, and have also tested TightVNC. I never tried UltraVNC. What are the advantages of using Ultra?

When I was using some old WYSE thin clients for MagicJack, the WYSE clients already had TightVNC installed. However, for some reason when they configured them, they enabled a long delay before it would make itself available on-line. So at first I thought is wasn't working. I accidently disconvered the problem when a phone call interupted me, and I went back and tried it again.

I have a Netgear router on my system and I never had to open any ports to get VNC to work. I did have to configure my firewall software to allow the connection.

I used VNC on my internal network, as well as over the Internet and it works great!

That is a good question? In my opinion, I think these are really the same but just reworked and given a different name. I used TightVNC on my other computers but built a new one and just did a search for VNC and Ultra was one that poped up so I got that. I did a search and RealVNC wants $22.00 for theirs. TightVNC now has a TightVNC for U3-compliant USB drives which I have two of. This is nice because you don't need to install TightVNC on the computer and taking up space, just plug the USB drive in and run TightVNC off of that. It would be nice if Proscan, ScanControl, BcTools, Freescan and others had programs that were U3-compliant so we could just plug the stick into the thin client and have all that you needed to stream and control the scanner.. What WYSE or client are you using for your MagicJack? I have that also and would like to use a thin client for it. Is there any special setup that I would have to do? Thanks and Cheers..Keithmj

RealVNC does have a free version as well:
RealVNC - VNC Free Edition 4.1

They are the original creators of VNC.

I was using the WYSE 9450 thin client. There is a guy that sells them on eBay pre-configured for plug'n'play with MagicJack.
WYSE XPe Thin Client Pre-Configured MagicJack 512/512mb - eBay (item 200340018435 end time Jun-06-09 20:22:32 PDT)

But there is really nothing too special required to set one up. MagicJack pretty much installs and configures everything for you, simply by plugging it into a USB port. The overhead is very low. So low in fact, I ended up just hanging it off my main computer. It never interferes with anything else.

The attraction of the thin client, as you know, is very low power consumption, no moving parts, no noise, no heat!

I just tried the free version of RealVNC and it worked on the first try but the only difference I can see is that it doesn't have file tranfer with the free one. UltraVNC has file transfer. Now I have all three of them on my computer and when my thin clients get here I'll get to play with these again and pick the one I want..Thanks..Keithmj

Why didn't you use the Remote Desktop feature of Windows XP? You wouldn't have had to install another program, open a port in your router and generally stress yourself out.

I use RDP a lot myself, it's great. But not available in XP Home, which could be why the OP isn't using it.

Ultravnc is good too, I use it for remote support when the other person needs to see what I'm doing, or I need to see what they're doing wrong :)

Hi..I tried that one several times and I can not get it to connect. I put in the IP address but all I get is "client could not connect to the remote computer". I'll stick with either TightVNC or UltraVNC but thanks for the suggestion..When I can get some free time I will give it another try..Also from what I have read, this can only be used on Windows XP Professional..I am using Home..Cheers..Keithmj

as others have stated, you are out of luck with RDP due to the OS. Vista has the same limitation of the home versions but there is a way to get it to work. try a Google search to see if there is a way to add this feature to WinXP Home.

EDIT: Try this (note that I have not attempted this):

I tried using Remote Desktop to administer my ATCSMon server. I ran into problems, such as RD not liking the colors on the server or not being able to restart ATCSMon.

I installed TightVNC and, although it is somewhat slower, it works fine.

Hi..I am using a thin client to stream my scanner and was wondering if you might know how much space MagicJack takes in KBs? I only have 35.5 MBs left of the 512MB CompactFlash. I checked their website but couldn't find anything and thought I'd just ask you since you have used them with MagicJack before I tried to get an answer from them..I have seen the clients on Ebay setup but I might be able to use this one I have if I have enough room on it..

My DigitalLife might work but as they said it is easier to just use TightVNC..And don't forget to add a password..Cheers..Keithmj

The MagicJack software resides on it's own USB module. It uses very little space on the client.

Are you certain you've removed eveything on your flash-memory that you don't need?

Magicjack

I can check to see what else I can remove besides the screensavers and some help files, I don't really need Internet Explore, but I should need it for MagicJack? I purchased a Apacer 4G ATA plugin card for the one thin client and I should have 4GB more to play with once I get it installed. I'll just try and install it to see what happens since I have the embedded WinXP image if I mess something up. I hardly use MagicJack as I don't call anyone and if I do I just use the cellphone. Thanks for the response..Cheers.
