To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello guys, I'm Steve from Unication. Yes, the Trunking Free Scan feature of G-Series Voice Pager is going to be in the Beta Test stage.

We're looking for G-Series Voice Pager customers who are interested in participating in a one-month Beta Testing trial of the Trunking Free Scan feature!
Unication will provide selected participants with a beta version of the Trunking Free Scan Firmware for a one-month testing period.
The beta test firmware will be registered to your G-Series device serial number for use during this trial and will not support other serial numbers.

I will also release the Beta Firmware Field Test application on this thread soon and everyone can fill out the application to have the opportunity to be our Beta Tester!
If you're the selected participants, we will inform you via the email and send you the Beta firmware.

Our engineering team is working on the final verification on the Trunking Free Scan features and it will be completed in a few days.

The link below is the information about this new feature for you to learn more:
Trunking Free Scan Feature Introduction

Please let me know your comments and share your ideas with Unication.

Thank you very much!:)

Steve
Hi Steve and all-
I'm new to the Unication forums. I have been into scanning for a long time, re: the crystal days and turning up the cans on an FM radio to receive the local PD. I have always had Radio Shack and GRE scanners. I am in the market for a new scanner and hear great things about the Unication G5. I have a question: If I purchase a new unit from a dealer, are they able to load the beta software on it for me? Will I need the beta software to have my G5 act as a scanner. Will a dealer do the initial programming on it for me as I have never used the Unication software? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated from yourself and the group. Thanks in advance for everyone's time and attention. I want to monitor the RISCON system(P25) and a department in the 480MHZ range.

I am neither a dealer nor do I work for Unication, but my educated guess would be that a dealer would probably not load the beta software on it for you. The beta software is purportedly tied and locked to the serial number. You can sign up for the beta software - the link is on another thread in this forum. While on that topic, its not too difficult to load a firmware update. Folks on this forum are usually very willing to help. You can definitely do this yourself (with help from these forums if needed) if you are approved to the beta program and you are sent the firmware update files.

Related to this question is whether the dealer will load initial programming for you. I suppose that depends on your dealer. However, in my opinion, you'll get the most enjoyment from this radio by programming it yourself. There are videos on YouTube that are tremendously helpful. I started from scratch. There's a bit of a learning curve but once you "get it" its really straightforward. Watching those videos, and asking for help here, will serve you immensely. The reason being is that you'll be able to tweak the zones, function knobs, settings, talk groups, etc. to your specific liking for the entire time you own the radio, and if you're anything like me you'll start using the radio and think of new ways to tweak the settings in the days and weeks to come based on your own specific listening style. By learning the skills yourself, you'll never need to wait or ask anyone to tweak your radio. Instead you'll be the guy everyone asks to tweak their radios.

Thank you for your thoughts on the best way to proceed. Did you load the beta software on your unit? From reading Steve's initial post, it looks like I would need the beta for the unit to act like a scanner and take advantage of the Trunking Free Scan feature. Am I right in that assumption? I am still a bit tech savvy and I think I would be able to learn how to program the unit by reading and with the help of others. My current scanner misses parts or all of some transmissions. That is what I am trying to correct. Do you think the G5 would correct this issue?

I do not have the beta yet but yeah you would need the beta for those features. I cannot comment yet on how it performs.

If you know how to follow simple directions then you can easily update the firmware to Beta.

My G5 does not miss transmissions that scanners that suffer from LSM issues do. If that is your issue, then take the plunge and you won’t be disappointed.

The unication Gx will absolutely correct your issue of partial or complete tx problems. With the current released firmware they perform amazingly and u will definitely not regret getting one. The beta firmware will add a lot more scanner type features which will make a lot of ppl happier. I would suggest d/l the PPS now and start experimenting with it to get an idea of how to use it before u even have the pager

Hello,

We're getting more and more customers to require re-open the Trunking Free Scan Beta Test again in the past few weeks. Therefore, after discussion in the internal meeting, to show Unication's gratitude to your long-term support to Unication, we decide to re-open the Trunking Free Scan Beta Test for you guys.

This time everyone can apply to the beta test qualification but with one condition. Unication would like to gather your PPS profile for the researching purpose.
Actually, we're building a PPS Sharing Center Platform (like the PPS profile database.) This is the nonprofit platform and we hope all the Unication users can help each other on it. By sharing the PPS profile to each other, everyone can benefit from it.

So, if you're willing to share the PPS profile to the platform, Unication will provide you the V1.40 beta firmware (as the same, the update will lock to your S/N)
Please be noted that your PPS profile information will be shared with others, so before you upload the file, please delete the private setting and keep the other setting.

Trunking Free Scan Beta Test Application Page: Unication Codeplug Sharing System
1. Click the page link above.
2. Select "Trunking Free Scan Beta Test Registration" to apply the qualification.
3. If you're not interested in the 1.40 beta test but want to share your PPS profile with others, you can select "Profile Sharing Center User Upload."

1.40 Beta Software Release Note
  1. Allow the pager to have the “Hold/Unhold” function of the talk group ID in the Trunking Multi-TG Scan receiving mode. In the voice call receiving mode, users can change the talk group ID receiving setting of the current knob by operating the pager’s hard-key. Users can keep listening to the voice message of the current TGID broadcasting until the users Un-Hold the TGID or turn the knob to another knob.
  2. Allow the pager to have the “temporary remove” function of the talk group ID in the Trunking Multi-TG Scan receiving mode. In the voice call receiving mode, users can change the talk group ID receiving setting of the current knob by operating the pager’s hard-key. Users can temporarily remove the TGID that us listening to from the original TGID list until the users Un-Hold the TGID or turn the knob to another knob.
  3. Added the Trunking Free Scan mode to the pager’s receiving mode. When the knob is set to Trunking Free Scan mode, the pager supports the “All band scan” and “Trunking Multi-System Scan” mode.
  4. Added the new function that the users can set and display the alias of the dispatch ID or the alias of other sending devices.
  5. Added the Trunking Free Scan mode to the pager’s receiving mode. When the knob is set to Trunking Free Scan mode, the pager supports the “Talk Group ID Scan Delay Time” function.
  6. Added the Trunking Free Scan mode to the pager’s receiving mode. When the knob is set to Trunking Free Scan mode and the pager is under Trunking Multi-System scan mode, the pager supports the “Site Stay Delay Time” function
  7. Added the Trunking Free Scan mode to the pager’s receiving mode. When the knob is set to Trunking Free Scan mode, the users can change the original function of the “RESET” key on the side of the pager to the “TG-Hold” key function and change the original function of the “Playback” key on the top of the pager to the “TG-Block/Remove” key function.
Caution! Please read the items below before you upgrade your G-series voice pager to the V1.40 Free Scan Beta version.
  • Once you upgrade to the V1.40 Free Scan Beta version, you CAN NOT downgrade to V1.30, V1.20, or older firmware version.
  • This V1.40 Free Scan Beta version has included all the improvements and updates in the official V1.30 firmware that is going to be released in several weeks.
  • Trunking Free Scan feature only exists in the V1.40 Free Scan Beta version. The coming regular V1.30, 1.40, and even 1.50 will not include the free scan feature.
  • Unication will constantly update the V1.40 Free Scan Beta version if there occur any issues in the future.
  • If the users do not want to have the free scan feature in their pager anymore, they have to wait until V1.50 to update their voice pager.
Thank you and please let me know below if you have any questions.

Steve
I didn't think it was publicly available yet.

I am told ALL versions of firmware(not just free scan beta) will have TG HOLD/REMOVE feature.
I think all will like as this works well .
Correct. Considered many customers need this feature, our engineering team worked hard to make it also happen on the other firmware.
We will add Hold/Unhold to the V1.30 in the next firmware update.
