To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Welcome to RR, hopefully now you won't get the same emails w/ the same questions over and over every day.

Deciding to keep us all updated on things directly was a great decision!

Unication *New* G4 And G5 Pagers/Somewhat Limited Scanner

I did some more research on Bluetooth speakers. So far, I have been interested in some from Motorola, one from Brookstone, and a couple from Ecoxgear.

I was at a Brookstone near me this afternoon and they had a few Big Blue Go Wireless Bluetooth Speakers in stock. It looks like they are no longer making these. The website shows that they are Currently Out Of Stock. I like that this has a mounting bracket with a suction cup for windshield mount. The reviews that I have read on these are favorable. Big Blue Go

Since I like Motorola naturally I Googled Motorola Bluetooth speakers. One of the ones that comes up in a search is the Motorola X Sol Republic Deck Ultra Wireless Bluetooth Speaker System. One of the features that I particularly like is that it has 3.5 mm jacks on it for both input AND output. So, if I understand this correctly, you could use this to received from the Unication and also "daisy chain" a wired commercial and mobile loud speaker to it. Motorola

There are also other Motorola Bluetooth speakers available, some of which have a visor mount. I think the visor mount would be quite handy for a number of installations. One of the other Motorola Bluetooth speakers is the Motorola Roadster 2. This also has a built in FM transmitter, which might be handy for sending to a broadcast radio receiver.

Another one is the Motorola SonicRider Bluetooth In-Car Speakerphone.

The Bluetooth speakers from Ecoxgear that have a compatible suction cup mount are the Ecorox and the Ecopebble speakers. The Ecopebble is a monaural speaker. It looks rugged and is waterproof.

The Ecorox is rugged, waterproof, and has a pair of stereo speakers built into it. It might be the definitive choice if you want to mount a speaker in your Jeep and continue listening in the rain with the top down!
https://ecoxgear.com/ecorox/

It looks like the 1/4-20 male that Ecoxgear uses is common to the camera industry. It should also be noted that RAM Mounts, which makes quite a bit of gear for squad car mounts, also has compatible gear for the 1/4-20 male thread.
RAM 1" Ball with 1/4-20 Male Threaded Post for Cameras Unpackaged - RAM-B-237U | RAM Mounts

I haven't finished researching this yet. This just happens to be what I have found so far and I hope to hear comments from others regarding compatible Bluetooth speakers suitable for mounting in a vehicle.

I ran across another Motorola Bluetooth speaker called the Motorola Roadster Pro. The reviews on it are quite favorable. They mention two 2 watt speakers under the cloth covering.

Another one that I am seeing good reviews on is the Jabra FREEWAY is the three 7-watt speakers. The review mentioned that it has one of the loudest outputs of any Bluetooth car kit. It also has an FM broadcast band transmitter.

You'll have to request these from Unication. If you own a G4, you should have no problem getting them from your sales rep.

Unication Tip Of The Day: You CAN scan conventional frequencies. To do a conventional scan, you need to enter the channels you wish to scan in a knob position. If you don't ever intend to manually select these as 'single' channels, you can add say 6 or 7 zones, and 'hide' the channels in say zone 7. You then create a new knob position, and choose Manual Scan, and you then 'scan' those knob positions. :)

My Two Most Desirable Features For The Unication G5

I know that there has been discussion here in the past regarding desired features. I tried not to focus on the previous discussion too much because I wanted to start with a clean slate and see what my thoughts were. I have traveled through a number of different counties recently in Minnesota and have listened to the Minnesota ARMER system. As a result of that, my two most desired features are:

-Nuisance talkgroup delete (either temporary or permanent) on Monitor Mode

-Encryption Mute

Now I realize that we all have different ways of listening, but really prefer to monitor all traffic on a site and then lockout talkgroups, as needed. That is what I have done with my Uniden HP-1 in the car and my Uniden BCD996XT at home. It works out quite well for me on both of those receivers. When a talkgroup is active that I am not interested in, I simply lock it out, either temporary or permanent. This allows new talkgroups to be received without specifically programming them in to the scan list.

The encryption mute feature on the Unidens has been a huge benefit for me. I don't necessarily want to avoid certain talkgroups just because they might be encrypted. It might be possible that some will only be encrypted at certain times.

With the Unication G5, in the Monitor Mode, I will here all activity on a certain site, but the encrypted talkgroups noise is a nuisance to listen to. If I can't hear the audio, I would love to be able to lock it out. If the Unication had the ability to mute the encryption noise, all the better.

I do recall reading somewhere in the past that the Unication supports AES-256 encryption software. If that is true, perhaps I could simply program any code at random, which would be incorrect, and the Unication would not receive anything, since the wrong code would be entered. I haven't seen anything in the PPS yet for programming AES-256. If I find it, I might try that to see how it works.

Does anybody happen to know how Motorola radios deal with that, either in the trunked mode or conventional, either analog or digital? I seem to recall that Motorola radios with not pass encrypted audio noise if the radio is not programmed to decode it.

Jabra FREEWAY With Unication G5

I was at a Verizon store yesterday and asked about Bluetooth speakers. I was shown the area and noticed the Jabra FREEWAY on the hook. The sales person told me that I could return it within 14 days, if it didn't work out. So, she caught me in a weak moment and I bought it.

Like many things these days, it has a rechargeable battery and a micro USB port, so I charged it up first. Later, I decided to connect it and give it a whirl. One of the first things I noticed was that at the end of each call is the Voice Announcement. At the end of each radio transmission it announces "CALL ENDED." Voice Guidance is enabled as the default setting when you turn on the Jabra FREEWAY the first time, but I disabled it for further evaluation.

One of the first things I noticed is that after it is paired with the Unication G5, there can be a delay in hearing the transmissions. For example, I might see MSP 2400 on the display and the G5 display shows Receive Voice Call, but they Jabra won't have sound at the speaker immediately. I suspect that it might have something to do with the Freeway's design, which has a battery saver feature built in to it. I have sent a message to Jabra to see if there is a way to disable the standby mode.

A friend of mine suggested that I connect the Freeway to power and that might disable that feature. I have tried that, but the standby mode remains on.

I also tried the Jabra Freeway for a telephone call and it worked great. It had nice loud audio. I tried streaming audio from my phone and it sounded great. I even tested the range and it was probably much more than the typical Bluetooth range.

As a result of what I have learned so far, I would recommend the Jabra Freeway for traditional usage, but not for monitoring two way radio communications with the Unication G5. Considering how little Bluetooth experience I have, I don't know if this would be true of all Bluetooth devices or just the Jabra Freeway.

Well, I haven't gotten my Unication to pair with my bluetooth headset yet (I have a Dash headset), but that's not how BT should work - well, I've used a commercial two way radio with a bluetooth headset, and it maintained a constant connection, so the battery on the headset was drained in like 3 hours (it was pure "talk time". So the battery 'save' sounds like it's basically going to sleep and then waking up every so often to check for activity. Or the unication is disconnecting. Not sure which. I'll see if I have another headset somewhere I can try with.

I found this out Sunday when I was trying build a scan list on conventional. After going through the PPS several times thinking that I am surely missing a section to build my scan list,

I happened to enter a frequency in another knob position, and all of a sudden it showed up in the scan list. So I used a zone to enter the conventional frequencies and now can pick and choose to build my scan lists.

Maybe a scan list feature will be in the new firmware upgrade.

Unication G5 Vehicle Mount

Yes, the belt clip is removable. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, I would like to have a PanaVise 777 ClipCaddy Holder to hold the G5, however, the OEM belt clip is just slightly too wide to work with the ClipCaddy. So, I can either find another device that will hold the G5 or I can modify the G5 clip to work with the ClipCaddy.

I was looking for ways to mount this up on the dash. Since the belt clip is so wide, I was wondering if the RAM High Strength Composite Cradle for Devices With Belt Clips RAM-HOL-BC1 would work .RAM High Strength Composite Cradle for Devices with Belt Clips - RAM-HOL-BC1 | RAM Mounts
I have used RAM Mounts in the past and they seem to work pretty well. There are some dimensions ;isted at The Mount Depot, so I may contact them for more information. RAM-HOL-BC1U RAM Universal Holder for Hand Held Two Radios

The other thought I had is to clip a pager or cell phone holster to either the RAM High Strength Composite Cradle or Panavise Clip Caddy. If I recall correctly, NiteIze has some pretty well made universal holsters. https://www.niteize.com/collection/Universal-Holsters-Phone-Cases.asp

It also looks like Unication has nylon holsters for other pagers. I don't know if they make one for the G5 yet. Also, it would need to have a narrower belt clip to work on the Clip Caddy.

David, anything special you're aware of needed to pair the G5 to a bluetooth headset? I have the Bragi Dash - Bragi and the G5 just doesn't 'see' it to even attempt to pair.

I asked them for any suggestions and they suggested I ask Unication: .. Thanks :)

Please contact customer support at Unication. Our specs are available to them from our website support.bragi.com .
It clearly appears that the Bluetooth hosting capabilities on your pager appear to be somewhat limited. As they would be the host device, it is most prudent to request their assistance first.
If they require specific information from us, please have them contact us here at customer support.
I think that this would be the easiest and fastest approach to explore the possibility of Bluetooth linkage to your Dash.

I went back and forth with my Rep. and Unication on this issue and never really got much help, although they did try. I believe the BT version on my G4 is 2.1. I have tried at least 6 BT receivers including an expensive Bose. I had luck with a Shure board but is has problems. It increases volume by 4-5 times during a long transmission as a big FD dispatch. I finally found a cheap car stereo at Walmart ($20.00) that pairs and sounds pretty good. Yes need a 12V PS and I run it through a mixer to my amp and bookshelf speakers. Its an XD107 by XOVision. I have two more boards coming from China and we'll see how they work. Have quite a collection of BT receivers now that I don't need. I am waiting for my Rep. to get in a new batch of amp/charges from Unication and he is going to put one through the test for me before I shell out $175.00 more dollars for one.

Wait, I'm confused. By amp do you mean desktop amplified charger?

I'm just trying to use a bluetooth headset.

NO. I have had a nice setup using a mixer and 60w amp for all my scanners. Sounds really good. I was just trying to pair it with a simple receiver to send to my mixer. The set up now is working well but it's not mobile. I need a 12V BT board that I can use in my vehicle to use the aux input on my car stereo. It's and older Clarion that I love and wont part with it just for my G4.
