• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

So several posts referencing usb being pushed in and design flaw. (wait never mind its the same user posting it several times) I have several G4 and G5 and not one has USB port issues. Even on the forums here i dont see much mention of bad usb ports. So is this really a large problem or just a user with issues on theirs?
The mere fact they are putting severe limitations on repairs tells me they must be getting a fair number of repair requests. Otherwise they wouldn't care, they would have no reason to do this. Whether it's the USB port issue or other various issues.

I recall being told by dealer it would be wise investment on the charger and docking one as the USB port has been known to fail IF it has endless hookups to the unit itself. I'm thinking most the failure I'd those who constantly plug into the unit to charge itself or change programming A LOT. Just by how it sounded. But idk.

Could it aside from part issues and supply chain etc be they are focusing on current models design and a future product to come?

WOW. and I HAD liked unication and was recommending them. I was hoping that they would come out with a slimmer pager (like the Minitor 5 or 6), guess that really is not happening now. WTF...
Not sure if the hardware requirements would allow a slimmer design and rugged housing with the engineered design for what it requires.

All,
Unication calls and tells us they will not fix any of them that are older than 5 years old and is sending them back.
So much for "built to last" in their motto eh? This is why "Right To Repair" is so important. Note to self: never buy a unication product, basically just the apple of the radio world.

Our clients have become experts at damaging the USB port. Unfortuanly its the only programming port. i have always thought it was stupid to not break those pins out to the bottom dock connector. While they can charge their devices, I cannot reprogram them when they want new TGs or things change.

And yes, its the most common failure we get them back for. The second is the RF board going deaf.

Good to know, and I'll inform any agencies considering purchasing to factor this in. Not even MSI end support in 5 years, I have sent APX 6000 ANs to the depot and they have been OOP for over 5 years, and they'll gladly take the $605 to flat rate or if "physical damage" time and materials.
Wow. Sounds like the Apple Repair depot/Flextronics took over running their repairs.

Add me to the list of it happening once. I use care now when plugging it in.

This was brought up before on the forums but never had the same traction as in this thread.

I am going to echo my response I left in that thread as my reply here.

This is a Taiwan (Corporate) decision, not a UnicationUSA decision. If you’d like to vent your concerns, the proper channel is to email info@unication.com so that Taiwan is aware of your problems with this change in repair policy.

I want to point out that this is not a new policy enacted in recent days. This has been their repair policy for several months now.

Thanks for your input, Phil (East Coast Pagers). I really do not like their decision and was hoping to get a dealers perspective. I’ll reach out to them.

Something you may want to consider is getting a "Micro USB Male to Female Extension Cable".

Search for that on E-Bay. Various types (straight, 90 degree angle) and various lengths.

I bought half a dozen Mini and Mico USB extension cables (about 6-8 inches long) and use them on several scanners as well as my G5s. They are great for moving the radios from one location to another, without having to plug and unplug the USB from the radios, and wear out the ports.

Of course these won't be good if you wear your G5 on your belt all day (with a cable dangling :)), but my uses include going from home to car to office and back home, plugging and unplugging the cable several times a day. The little pigtail makes it easy to quickly connect and disconnect without wearing out the USB plug on the radios.

Plus if your G5 falls off the table, there's a better chance it will unplug from the extension cable versus damaging the radio.

Also search for "micro usb magnetic connector". I use those for one of my cell phones. Super easy charging, but not good for programming.

A lot of things relating to this USB port do not make sense. If you look at the G1, they sell a drop in charger cradle. Then they offer a separate programming cradle. The G2-G5 don't have that option. WHY NOT? Furthermore, why not design a cradle that does both so there wont be a need for a USB port? I mean really, lets be honest, they know a problem exists with the USB port. Same issue with the included antennas. They void your warranty if yopu use aftermarket antennas to improve your reception. Why not design a better antenna in the firsst place? No, thy're not gonna deal with the problem, just refuse to fix it if it breaks. I have never broken a cxenter pin on any of my Moto radios. If the pin is a concern, make a stronger pin. Period. Each pager costs a pretty good penny. There HAS to be a better way to deal with this issue other than refusing to repair a unit. Some people, like myself, have 2 or more of these expensive pagers. You invest that much, money you deserve a better product and better service when something goes wrong. Thats how I feel about it.

All good points, and you should send that to info@unication.com. When I spoke with UnicationUSA about this change in repair policy, they directed me to share that email address with anyone who wants to vent their frustrations. I recommend emailing Unication to let them know.
Already done. Lets see what if anything happens. I'm not holding my breath.

Another email sent. Hopefully they receive numerous email and reverse their policy.
