• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Could also use one of the magnetic USB cables. You plug in an adapter that stays in the USB port and the cable magnetically attaches to the adapter, any stress on the cable and the cable disconnects instead of transferring that stress to the USB port. magnetic USB charging cables on amazon
I use those magnetic cables, but only on my iPhone. On the pagers, it makes no sense to me. The idea is to minimize damage, I get it. However, you still have to sit there and pull out the little metal plug when you want to make any program changes. So you still have to use the cable anyway. I have a drop-in charger and an amplified base/charger so I'm good. I still say that Unication can and should make a combination charger/programmer for this USB issue to be finally put to rest.

Hey Manny, don't hold your breath as they say. UniVAcation hasn't even done any firmware work on issues / wishes we all reported 2 years ago, never mind designing a new charger. Great idea though. And the original amplified charger still has a major flaw in which I still have a ticket generated for 20 months ago that hasn't even had a hint in being fixed. They just don't give a :poop: . Took my $150 and ran. I think we can say Bye-Bye to Uniden and Univacation, and hello to Blue Tail Tecnologies @btt .
At least Todd supports his products with constant updates and listens to all of us for bug fixes and improvements / wishes.
OK rant done ;)

While nice, Bluetail does not currently have a competing portable product to fit the usage of my agencies using the G series for paging. I cannot also put them on the hips of tow drivers.

Sad fact is, unication has some very niche usage cases that made them popular that they have now shat all over.

I'm not making an excuse for them but I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the recent chip shortages and maybe they aren't able to get the parts needed to repair as easily as they could previously. Maybe @Uni1 can chime in and let us know if it is simply a policy change or if there is a reason like this behind it...

I can't see his stats; it says they're unavailable for view.

Sounds like Unication is on the road to shutting down then. Migrate users to other brands.

With the last FW update being what, two years ago and the lack of response, I would not be surprised if this is the death rattle. Who wants over/under on how long they will circle the drain? This has got to affect their sales. We have stopped recommending them to public safety and are looking at other solutions for the tow crowd.

And apparently our concerns and emails have been heard and made a difference. Only moments ago Kelly Hooper, Director of Sales & Marketing at Unication responded to my email with the following;

"I appreciate you taking time to reach out and express your concerns with us. I am happy to say that we received approval from Unication headquarters yesterday to launch a new OOW Repair Program that will not limit repairs by age and will be available for any G-Series device. This was just authorized yesterday, so I don’t have all the details available just yet, but I wanted to let you know a solution is coming and we will announce more information in the coming weeks."

Thanks @w2lie for providing the email address and suggestion we reach out to them.

6- Solid support from the dealers . Thank you Ray.
7- New OOW Repair program ...Priceless.

Many thanks @w2lie for providing the email address and suggestion.

Why would you want a Unication pager when a scanner does the same thing but much cheaper? and more frequency coverage?
For me, I've had quality problems with P25 systems and simulcast issues with scanners. I'm not sure if simulcast is still the issue or if it is just decoding issues period, but I rarely have one with a G5.

A SDS100 is "much cheaper" than a unication? Obviously the SDS100 would be the only comparable scanner, being the only scanner that supports simulcast ...

The Unication performance on LSM systems is on the same level as the commercial two-way radios built to operate on those systems. The only truly portable scanner that can perform at that level is the SDS100, which retails at $649. The Unication's are priced at $645-745 depending on band choices. If you hold a G series in one hand and the SDS100 in the other, you will see that the build quality of the Unication is significantly more robust and the footprint is much more compact. If you are purpose oriented beyond hobbyist needs, say a a reporter, photographer, insurance adjuster or tow truck operator, the Unication is much more applicable to your needs.

Email received today after my letter of complaint and suggestions;

"I really appreciate you taking the time to express your concerns and ideas to us. I have not had anyone suggest what you have on making a desktop programmer for G5, and appreciate your thoughtfulness to offer ideas for solutions.

I wanted to reply to you and let you know that we are in the process of updating the G-Series repair program and will begin accepting out of warranty units over 5 years old again for repair. Yesterday Unication headquarters in Taipei, Taiwan authorized several new accommodations that will allow Unication USA to obtain parts and establish a full repair facility here in the United States that will be open to all G-Series devices, regardless of their age. Though I do not have all the details confirmed, planning for this project has already begun and is our highest priority. We hope to provide additional information and a timeline on this in the coming weeks, as it is confirmed. I know this is not a solution for today, but rest assured a solution is coming soon and I estimate we will be announcing this in early October.

I also wanted to touch base on the Micro USB Port issue you mentioned, as I recently submitted data to our Engineers in Taiwan for evaluation of this issue. I am still awaiting their response, but hopeful that after evaluation they will be able to offer some insight and solutions. I will keep you in the loop on any updates. Thank you!

I feel like the broken programming port or however issue could be solved as the Motorola Minitor programmable pagers have done. Contacts on the bottom of the unit handle both charging and programming. Dirty contacts can be easily cleaned. There's no reason something as heavy duty as advertised should rely on anything other than weatherproof contacts. Since its equipped with bluetooth, it wouldn't need any kind of open ports such as the small headphone port that minitor pagers have had. Bluetooth to accommodate programming

Those cables are available in both charge and charge/data versions. With the latter it could be used for programming.
