BCD396XT/BCD996XT: Uniden 996xt

I have a Uniden 996 xt and purchased the rear cable to program it. The problem is that the cable has the rear connection and the front connector. How do you plug it in to the computer?

If that is the original serial cable that came with the scanner, the small end is a Hirose plug which goes into the front connector of the scanner. You would need a USB to serial adapter such as this to be inserted between the computer and the scanner cable. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insign...rolific-chipset-black/5883029.p?skuId=5883029 It would help to have the actual link to your cable so I can see the description. You need ro use the front connector to update firmware. To connect to the rear connector, you would also need a null modem adapter.

That's a "serial" based cable not used as much these days. There is no guarantee that a "usb-serial" adaptor would work in this situation.

I use the original serial cable that came with all of my older scanners, including my BCD996XT's. The USB to serial adapter I suggested is the one I use. I have never had a problem using that adapter with any software or scanner. I am currently using it with a Windows 11 computer.

I have the exact scanner, including a large number of others all using the mentioned cable.

My thoughts here is your adding another connection into the system which really doesn't have to be there. The cable that is linked is more uptodate and compatible with the latest Operating systems.

My earlier computers had 9 pin serial connectors which mated with the DB9 connectors on the serial; cables which came with the scanners. I have a ton of the serial cables from 396T's, 996T's, 396XT's, and 996XT's. When computers switched to USB ports only, I started using the USB to serial adapters and have been doing so ever since. I have cloned a lot of scanners using 2 serial cables and a null modem adapter.

Actually there is since Windows 10 does recognize the adapter natively as if the computer actually had a serial port and tends to be the preferred setup as it's not laden with the driver issues and bugs of that "USB" cable which just has it's own proprietary serial hardware built in.
