Uniden BCD436HP charging

I have a question. It is my understanding that the Uniden BCD436HP will only charge when the power is off and that's fine. My question is, will it run plugged in on external power (saving the batteries)?

I was a little surprised when I plugged it into my car charger and it doesn't seem to be running on the external power, instead it appears to be using the batteries.

Never mind, I seem to have answered my own question. I took the batteries out and plugged it in. It runs while plugged in, so I'm sure this means it does run on external power, just not charging. That works for me!
