All valid points but I say give it another 6 months tops and we'll have plenty of portable options to choose from. I'm looking at the new Raspberry Pi B, myself. There's a complete, ready-to-run GNU Radio image for it located here: GNU Radio and rtl_sdr on Raspberry Pi ← Gareth Hayes and I'm currently working on creating a virtual machine to try and get OP25 working in a similar environment. My eventual goal is to create a portable version of Luke Berndt's OpenMHZ.com setup that will run on the PI using an Airspy Dongle as the connected radio. If I can get that working, I'll have a P25 DTRS portable monitor that will outperform ANY scanner on our local DTRS, and it should hopefully run less than $350 to put it all together. Assuming all goes well, it'll be the last "digital scanner" I ever need to buy.

That's great stuff! I love the Raspberry Pi platform. I replaced an entire HP desktop clunker that I was using as a dedicated radio comm. streamer with a tiny little RaspPi that needs very little space and very little maintenance (Windows updates, antivirus, etc.)

Good luck with that portable monitor. Sounds like a great Kickstarter project.

as soon as anyone on here has any info on the HP2 "sub menu P-25 settings"....and IF those settings improved p-25 and phase II performance, please let me know. I returned my HP2 due to LOUSY p-25 performance, and HORRIBLE phase II decoding.....without knowing about that "sub menu".....thanks, Uniden, for keeping it a secret. You MIGHT have had a satisfied customer ... Instead, It cost me $25 to return it, and I am a very unhappy Uniden customer.

Does Whistler sell a comparable scanner to the HP-2?

Whistler sells much better scanners, since they are built on GRE specs.

Really it's more subjective than that, and each system seems to work or not work on Uniden or GRE or both or none. Up until the x36's came out, NOTHING worked well on our DTRS. The closest to decent reception you could get was a PRO-106 with the 800MHz antenna, and even then it was hit or miss. With the 436, I'm able to decode most (at least 95% or higher) of the transmission on that system. It was a breakthru for us here in Phoenix - I had all but given up on listening to this system prior to that.

Also, my previous experience with GRE products was that they were not as sturdy as the Uniden models. I had a PRO-96 that literally fell apart from a few years of normal use. Now, I admit I'm rough on scanners, but even so I've got plenty of old Unidens - older than my now dead Pro-96 - that still work just fine. So it depends really on the model and in some cases, the systems being monitored when trying to determine the best scanner for you.

Oh really? Give me a solution for programming a trunk system with 33+ unique control channels, without duplicating it into multiple TSYS objects, on a PSR-500 or 600.

The majority of my scanners were the Pro-43, Pro-2005, 2006 and 2052. They were from Radio Shack so they must have been made by GRE. They were great scanners until trunking and digital came along. I liked these scanners better than the Unidens at the time.

Per the RR Wiki, the 43, 2005, and 2006 were GRE models, but the 2052 was a Uniden machine.

The intent was explained.

You want to go on pontificating on irrelevant tangents, knock yourself out.

Well ,you bring the tangents up, expect comment.

Ooops. Now he will say that one didn't work well in hindsight.

And Uniden made several other models for Radio Shack, too.

Look at my list of scanners in my signature. I have used most of them on the multiple digital trunked systems here in Los Angeles, and more recently, the WS-1080 vs the 436HP and 536HP on the RWC simulcast trunk sites in Phoenix (where my daughter/son-in-law, and grandson live). I will take the 436HP and 536HP anyday over any GRE/RS/Whistler scanner for areas like LA or Phoenix with multiple systems.
I'm not saying the WS-1080 (AKA PSR-800) is not good for some things, but the new Unidens are just so much better (IMHO) for programming complex trunk systems and P25 simulcast quality. Frankly, I use the 1080 mainly for its IF output feature with DSD+, but now that I have put a discriminator tap on one of my 996XTs, that frankly works much better, with more flexibility.

One of the best and underrated radios Uniden ever made was the BC898T. Just a solid all around, well working TrunkTracker.

I brought up the tangents?

Geography and corporate ownership are two subjects I wasn't talking about. On the other hand, you were.

Unless you're the type who's uncomfortable with dialogue, I'd agree.

You said Uniden is the last major scanner manufacturer in America, then brought up Apple in a scanner topic.
Yeah, I'd say you are going off on tangents.

Yeah, I'd say you are going off on tangents.

I was discussing modern corporate practices in a thread claiming a pretty dumb premise. Namely, that a company should or would only work one line of project at a time. You're the one decided to give wholly unnecessary geography lessons.

Keep it up, Bunky.
