Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

And who will ever use the 12500 channel capacity that it offers.

I filled up 2000 channels in my APX in just my local area and national interop stuff.

Perhaps /V\ could take a hint from the 'Mission Plan' concept.

I'd welcome 10000+ channels!!!

Well - they APX does have the Micro SD slot for 'future expansion'. Think of the channel capacity from another perspective. We here love to stuff as much as we can in a radio because we like to be able to listen and/or talk when the need arises (and authorized). For the average line level Officer, Deputy, Agent, Fireman, Paramedic, they only want the channels they will use on a daily basis for dispatching and tactical use. The rest of the stuff is just frills for them. And they probably don't even know that the extra channels are in there unless their radio shop who programmed the radios talked to the administration, and then the administration directed their Training Units to train the troops. From my experience, the average line level person and supervisor has no idea what is in their radio and don't really care until the need arises.

2 month bump:

Any word on the new firmware? I just got a handful of XG100P's recently and while it's been "so far, so good" would love to have MPL and MDC. Admittedly, I have not checked with anyone locally yet but I just wandered over this thread :)

Yes. Harris did release their firmware version 3. However, all it does is allow to select when the MDC is sent, Post PTT, Pre PTT, or both. And that's all the new firmware did. No other MDC features are available. We are told maybe June or August for any of the features after another firmware update.

The kicker is you have to purchase their new programming software. They allow 5 installs per license, and you have to be online to register the install. Then you have go and convert your old Mission Plans from the old software to the new software. Then you have to go through each of the zones in the mission plan to confirm everything is still there and adjust the MDC accordingly. One of the many issues is the conversion process doesn't work well on some Mission Plans. No idea why, and the engineers don't have a clue...

Probably another year wait to get all the MDC features actually working - if we're lucky.

I did forget to mention the new firmware also adds multiple tone selection. Motorola calls it MPL (Multiple PL), Kenwood calls it OST (Operator Selectable Tone).

We are using these as analog only on our current VHF system, and I must say they do not sound as good as our old HT1250s. Perhaps when we go to digital they will perform/sound better?....

Digital isn't any better. We use P25 for simplex tactical. It sounds like crap on the Harris, very clear on the APX7000. Kenwood 5210 and XTS2500's we use...

How do you enable dtmf on the Unity? I must have a setting wrong because when I PTT and push one of the numbers on the keypad I get no tone at the radio or on another radio on the same freq. In Audio Settings I have KEYPAD TONES ENABLED.

They just released Type 99 Paging (Quick Call II) along with the related firmware. The DTMF feature is a couple of months out. Just remember you will need to get a feature string update to enable the DTMF pad and/or Type 99 Paging.

The firmware is their new XGP. And you're right, the new versions aren't listed because they haven't been formally released yet.

No idea on the price. It is a feature they promised us long ago. The feature number for Type 99 is "09"

If I may throw my 3 cents out....I own the 3 multi band radios and put them through thorough testing and know the programming features very well ...APX7000R vhf/uhf, Liberty and the Unity XP-100F. Each have their pros and cons. Too much to list here. But to sum it up the Liberty maybe the most rugged and a true brick to hold. Audio - ok. A true interop radio that you keep in a go box. It is nothing I would carry or use in day to day operations. The Unity has some nice features, like RSSI, more comfortable to hold but does not have a rugged feel and only basic water resistance, audio ok. Has scanning issues, GPS gives real-time info but no way points. It rides with me in the truck for interops. The APX is what I choose to carry everyday out of the 3. Nothing beats the 1 watt clear Rx Moto audio. Nice form factor to hold and radio is easy to use. No issues with scanning - hey its a Moto, the GPS will give lat & long and store waypoints but no real-time info. If they made the APX in 3 bands it would truly be the best all around radio. And yes before you all jump on me...I am in contact with Harris over the scanning, other issues and options, they are working with me to get the radio where it needs to be. Now if you could take all the good points from each and put them together, that my friends would truly be an awesome radio.

XGP was supposed to be released today. For some reason there is no listing for the XG-100p at all on the Software FX page and the XG-100m shows that it runs ECP. The only time I have seen reference to an XGP is where RPM lists ECP/XGP in its code load.

Just FYI, XGP1 has been out in beta for 6+ months. It does have some bugs but does work on TDMA. And works with RPM 9. XGP2 is supposed to fix bugs and give you TDMA and EDACS in the same radio that support it. XGP2 beta is out but I have been on vacation and had not had a chance to test it yet. Update on that next week

XGP2 was supposed to be out (stable) as of the 28th. I have around 14 radios that have been on order (XG-25p, XG-25m and XG-75p) since October that still haven't shipped due to this issue and requiring EDACS ProVoice and P25 TDMA.

I need to call TAC again on Monday since last time I called I was told that I was on the most current Firmware (ECP) and was never offered XGP1. Also, XGP doesn't appear anywhere on the Software FX page.
