Can anyone advise if Uniden expects the upcoming Tariffs on import electronics to have any impact on Uniden products? Are any imminent price increases expected?

I'm just wondering why upcoming potential tariffs on CHINA would have any affect on products from other countries...

In other words...why was this even asked?

Oh well.

Invalid assumption on the OP's part--that the SDS100 is made in China.

The big reason is you have near free labor (Wage arbitrage) ie: employees making 2 dollars a day. #2 no environmental laws to deal with, you can just dump the heavy metals and toxic products right in the Mekong river. No employee OSHA laws, ie no first aid kits, safety systems needed which lowers cost of production. if a 17 year old PCB cutter gets crushed, you bring in his cousin to finish the job. no pesky lawsuits etc..

The US will never be able to compete against that. We used to run our factories the same way at the turn of the industrial revolution but we moved on and now someone else takes up the slack.

Make sure to turn in your shiny new smartphone, laptop, Television, Microwave Oven, CD player, Camera etc at the end of the day.

You can bet they were all made under those conditions and you bought them at a bargain.

Here in the US, where manufacturing once occurred, are super fund sites with toxic plumes of trichlorethylene radiating toward the aquifer. When I worked in an electronics plant, it was used as a degreaser to clean flux off circuit boards and was purchased in 55 gallon drums. Great stuff!

We have industrial accidents here as well. Manufacturers wanting to take shortcuts, sending employees into dangerous areas to keep production numbers up. Crushed, burned, mangled, boiled with steam. Fried with microwaves (drying lumber).

There is a pet food plant in Illinois that stole electricity and natural gas from the local utilities through illegal connections. Used dead sick cattle, euthanized with poison showing up in the product. Need to make those profits because, some Fund Manager has a mortgage payment to make and needs to feed a stable of hungry race horses or put gas in the Ferrari. . Its the 'merican way!

I'm fully aware that Uniden is a Japanese company and wasn't expecting the radios to be designed or manufactured in the USA. Just curious why the factory is in Vietnam, of all places. In my mind, at least, Vietnam isn't a country that is well known for manufacturing electronics, or much of anything for that matter besides low tech stuff like clothing and shoes....

I worked with a Vietnamese guy back in the late 70's. he was a EE, had been an army general. Knew his stuff. My boss at the time was also a EE, he was from Turkey, he studied electrical engineering under Kerosene lamp in a tent. He was also very smart, his wife a Japanese artist.

It wasn't all invented here in 'merica. (despite what Donald Trump would like to think)

I think you are way behind the times. Vietnam has rapidly moved into manufacturing, especially electronics.

Actually, with the equipment available today it takes little other than $$$$ to quickly establish chip placement, plastic molding and most other tools and machines needed.

I think they are near the top 10 in electronic exports.

In addition, they have a set of occupational safety laws that went into effect in 2016 and they track incidents, Vietnam may not be as "backwards" as most people think.

And, as a seller to WalMart and a couple of other big retailers, our factory is subject to inspection by their compliance departments to ensure that the work environment is safe and compliant with labor standards (and our customers' expectations and requirements).

former employer was also a TCE abuser, became a Superfund site (and still is), contaminated the city water supply

You are confusing me for someone who cares about them.

OP question: Will the anticipated tariffs on electronics possibly lead to an increase in prices for Uniden products?
UPMan's answer: No

Time to move on, I think.

We are talking about Donald Trump's punitive tariffs and world trade here. How can that not be political?

Maybe there are some more fluffy threads.....

I believe this thread has run its course.
Time to put it to sleep.
