SDR dongles aren't plug and play and take some work to learn. I can't say if it is user error, a bad dongle or something else, but before giving up on it I suggest you take @PDXh0b0 up on his offer, he is very knowledgeable and will help you figure it out.

You wasted 40 bucks? You had a minimum of 30 days to return it if you suspected the dongle was dead.

See a lot of posts where you simply complain as opposed to what most people do which is ask for help.

I bought a rtl v4 sdr downloded unitrunker the hooked up an nothing is recognized its hooked up. did i get ripped off by amazon?

Get to github then what? nothing says setup or get started? Starting to think this sdr was a major waste of $40 bucks.

Your lucky i've had luck whats so ever with sdrtrunk an now unitrunker rtl-sdr v4 from amazon. all i noticed is nut on sma was very loose , windows 11 will not recognize sdr.

Had the same issues to NO results, bought from amazon disappointing start to SDR but as other always point out its ALWAYS user error , THANK YOU Premium users.

Its Prob like everyone told me USER ERROR, or a defective v4.

I'd save your money an jump on the AIRSPY. I bought a v4 on amazon an its just a $40 paperweight so much for getting a good start with SDR? Not sure if i'll give it another try again.

Maybe the dongle is NG. It happens time to time. Maybe its an issue on your PC. That happens too.


Maybe take advantage of what was offered to you.

I had difficulties getting mine to work at first. Try experimenting with a range of software. I've had success using GQRX on Linux, and with several apps on Android.

The Android apps were almost idiot-proof. You literally download "rtl-sdr driver" app, and whatever radio application you'd like to use, plug it in, and give it a go.

It might not even be a software problem. if the computer isn't even recognizing the dongle then it might be a faulty USB port/cable. I have a couple worn-out USB ports on my desktop that just Will Not Work with certain devices/cords but work fine with others, it's a pain in the ass but I work around it. I assume you've done all the usual "try a different cable" "try a different port/computer" steps, dmchalmers, but if you haven't that would be something to try.

There are some how to’s on YouTube that will generally make them like new again. You just need to have some real small picks or jewelers screw drivers. Always power the device off before attempting.

Yes Maybe i did come across wrong , BUT so many on here automatically blame newbie or user error without a reasonable explanation. I've pointed our absolete freq an has taken months for some expert to clarify, no wear near my area? Not to mention P I E &g Co Op in nothern Mi using MTP-1327 system that all the experts said they do NOT . Do your HOME WORK !

It's funny how I got my first SDR V3 and had no clue, until I figured it out.

The SDR is such a capable little device that it astonishes me that people aren't even willing to learn what they're capable of or how to use them. I'm no expert by any means. Hell, a few years ago when I was getting into trunking/p25, I studied for a few days just how those systems even worked and even today I wouldn't say I completely grasp any of it. I just got into SDRs at the beginning of this year. Not going to pretend it wasn't a learning curve, but it's also not rocket science. Regardless, learning is good for the mind and when you refuse to even accept help I think you're the problem at that point.

So today I setup a SDR. Took 30 minutes with a new PC.

Open PC. Power up and go trhu setup.
Download drive for RTL
Download SDR Trunk
Insert RTL.
Run Driver Program.
Start SDR. Wait for calibration (took longer than setting up PC)
Program frequency.
Start and listen.

As reference the Beelink mini PC is an ideal unit for stuff like this, especially for remote applications. Mine is now sitting in the barn connected to a VHF multicoupler. RDP to it to listen or change settings. I have less than $200 in this setup and have conventional as well as our county trunk system going. (second dongle for our county trunk hooked to rubber duck on SDR)

I did have issues on my other one with SQ settings but that was resolved pretty quik with help from here.

Never did i imply PIE&G was using MPSCS i said they were using the the Atlanta 2 mpscs tower for their mtp-1327 system an reported all the listed 400 mhz freq's have been dead air for yrs. Thnak You
