Fascinating . . . I've never had any ambient noise on my feed, but reading this caused me to tap on the top of my 197 and sure enough I see it on the VU meter. But, it's -20 db so can't hear it on the feed. And I did the same tap test on the Yaesu FT-8000 providing the right channel of my feed; no indication at all on the VU meter. Strange.

Mine must be a bit more sensitive because mine peaks the meters if i actually tap lightly on the scanner case, and you can clearly here me talking if im at my desk

I just hooked my 197 up to my computer. I used a mono to stereo adapter in the back and then stereo to the computer. No usb cable. I couldnt get any noises while looking at the Audacity program. Do you use the usb cable while providing the feed or just the speaker wire?

FWIW, my PSR 500 would couple through taps on the case to the speaker. I was assuming a filter had become microphonic.

Wow, that is weird!

That said, I rapped the top of my PRO-163 firmly and did hear that over the feed. But, loud talking or whistling at the scanner from even a few inches away did not come over. But my dog looked at me strangely like, who's he talking to? lol
