There was an attempt to shut the NIST stations down years ago that failed. But today, every thing you list is better done with an under $200 GPSDO. But legacy equipment still needs WWVB on 60 kHz. If WWV/WWVH were converted to being used for propagation forecasting, they might have a more useful purpose.
Problem with GPS is that it’s being jammed over in Europe, and I don’t doubt that the same will happen here before long:

It‘s always good to have an alternate in case the primary becomes unreliable.

And WWV does do propagation reports, at 18 minutes past the hour.

GPS jamming from ground to ground is very limited in range. (The real problem is GPS jamming ground to air or Air to Ground. Neither is likely to be a problem for most of us.) And WWV accuracy is far less that any GPSDO.

Who determines “truthful”?

Exactly.

Here's the real rub: The Feds have NO BUSINESS printing, publishing or speaking the news! That's reserved for sht hole countries like Russia, China, Iran et al...

And for the record, the BBC as well as MANY other publications are just a rag! Read Sig...

Dan Robinson is someone who has “been there, done that,” and I respect his opinion:

“Dan Robinson, a 34-year veteran of Voice of America and its former White House correspondent, wrote last year: “I have monitored the agency’s bureaucracy along with many of its reporters and concluded that it has essentially become a hubris-filled rogue operation often reflecting a leftist bias aligned with partisan national media. It has sought to avoid accountability for violations of journalistic standards and mismanagement.””

At the same time, I sincerely hope that the Federal Government will not abandon shortwave radio as a means of communicating with Global Audiences.

Previously, I sent this through the White House contact page:

“Mr. President;

First, I am not, and never have been, employed by Voice of America or Radio Free Europe.

But you might want to think twice before you shut them down.

If the electronic networks such as internet and mobile phones are ever shut down, you might want a means of communicating with the populations overseas; you might want to factor that into your decision-making process.

Radio can be an essential resource when the crunch comes, as was demonstrated recently in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee: A Shining Moment for Ham Radio

You might want to keep international broadcasting — with appropriate messaging — as “another club in your bag.”

I was one of a gazillion truck drivers who would be lost without a GPS. Shutting that down would cripple transportation.

With a complete lack of accountability the "news" becomes a race to the bottom and the government can operate with even less accountability than they have now, much like they do in other countries that are run by oligarchs. Might as well head to the bread and circus stage like the Romans did as their empire failed.
