• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So I have an old VX-180 that is no longer in service. I have never programmed a radio yet but could learn. My question is can this be programmed to use with Motorolla Talkabouts? If so can anyone point me in the right directions please.

Thanks in advance

Items your going to need:
Sign up to VSOL @ businessonline.vertexstandard.com (this will provide the ability to download any software, especially VX-160/180 CE44Win.exe)
Purchase a CT-42 connection cable or FIF-10A (or the new FIF-12) USB Programming interface with CT-106 connection cable

That depends. Do you have the UHF or VHF model. If you have the UHF model, then more than likely you can program in the FRS frequencies that the talkabouts use. But the VX-180 doesn't do user selectable tones (Private tones) that you can change on the fly, so you will have to pick one for each channel when you program it up.

VSTech - Thank you very much for the info on the Vertex Online site. I set mine up and got in this morning. Just like you said, all the software is there!

Interesting thing thought, either they use the same web designer as Motorola Online, or somehow Motorola/Vertex are connected. I looks like Vertex just removed the Motorola logos and put their stuff in.

Thanks again!

Several years ago Motorola took over the commerical side of Vertex, the ham radio line stayed at Vertex and the Marine line changed to Standard-Vertex.
