Ok have done some testing in AP mode and have a problem.

When listening to audio from the scanner and siren there is a delay however the audio from the scanner will stop and the audio in siren stops at the same time cutting off the last syllable or so of what is said.

So apparently even though there is a delay the siren app doesn't know this and shuts down at the same time the scanner audio stops.

Is anyone else hearing this and or is there a way to fix this?

It's a bit of work, but you could setup a VPN server on your home network and then use the Siren app on your Android device from anywhere. Of course this would require the VPN client to be installed on your Android device too.

I know what you meant below, but wanted to make one clarification. Ports 80 and 443 are not passed through the firewall from outside to inside by default. Although, all ports are passed through the firewall from inside to outside. Once the connection request is made from the inside an entry is logged in the firewalls NAT table and then the traffic is allowed back in only if it matches the original address/port the traffic was requested on. It's a small clarification but it's important.

One of the ways that this is achieved is by blocking 'ports', aka source/destination addresses on devices connected to the internet, from being accessed from across the boundary between your local network and the internet (or vice versa). A number of 'ports' are passed through this boundary by default, such as port 80 (for http, which is how you access websites) and port 443 (for https, the secure version of http). Less-often-used ports are left closed/inaccessible by default, to prevent your devices on your local network from being attacked. For example, you wouldn't want someone to be able to use the port normally allocated to QuickTime streaming, for making a remote desktop connection to your computer, where they could do anything to the machine as if they were sitting in front of it.

Some of the Asus routers have vpn capabilities with 3rd party firmware. The RTN66U is only around $100 and works great.

AP works well, with one minor glitch. I restarted the 536HP with a different start up key. When start up finished, I had to restart the WiFi in AP mode. That's only happened once so far, so I don't know if it was just a glitch or if that's the way it works.

I also found that when I restart the scanner, I have to re connect my phone manually. It would be nice if reconnection was automatic.

It would also be nice if muting the audio on the AP would stay in that condition during restarts. It's not a big thing but I find I have to reselect that every time I start Siren.

Other than that, no problems. It will be interesting to see future versions.

I'm late to the party. Just installed app... Function knob on my radio is really touchy. How do you tell what mode your on? At first I could not connect. But It is running now...The only way it would connect is by me shutting down ProScan. Its running wireless. If I click on ProScan now I get ...Waiting on Scanner about 4 times then No Connection

You can only connect to the scanner from one device at a time.

I believe so, but only UPMan can answer for sure. I think he said a while ago that the wi-fi dongle can only handle one client at a time.

Bluetooth vs Wifi Access Point

Seems like Bluetooth would solve this problem for those who want to install both the scanner and a display in their vehicle. Anything over the cell network to internet to home router I think is going to bogg down and be crappy. I use a Bluetooth connection with my Escort radar detector to my phone app and it works great. But I believe Upman was stating that you could use the access point option direct connect to the phone without a wifi router?
