You can add RIDs along with what unit they are. When entering them just put an i in front of the number.

The UID is translated to a more meaningful identification of the radio transmitting at the time.

I have just shy of 4000 of them and have never entered the "i". Everything displays as expected, so I was wondering what the difference would be exactly.

When you enter the uids, do they need to be separated by county? Assuming it's a Statewide system, and you are adding uids for multiple counties, or can you enter everything under the name of the state system? I am wanting to use NC VIPER and add uids for several counties. For example:Chowan and Perquimans often back each other on calls and use the other counties talkgroups. I am trying to not duplicate the uids. Thank you

Regards Richard

Highly unlikely you will duplicate UIDs on the Viper system. Chowan will use UIDs of 41-42xxxx and Perquimans uses 143-144xxxx as UIDs. They can be entered with the VIPER system you use, they do not need to be separated by county or site.

As a side note, there is a big list of VIPER UIDs in the RR Wiki HERE.

What is the reason for the "i" in front? Is it something the older scanners need?

I believe that the "i" is needed for scanners that do NOT have SD cards/programmed by Sentinel. This was a feature added later on to the x96 model scanners.

The purpose of a UID is to let you know who (specific unit) that is talking. You'll have to build your own table on what UID equates to what unit, unless you are fortunate to have someone do the work and is shared, such as the VIPER system.

Back in the 80's when the PD I was with when we wanted to have a private call to another specific radio we placed an "I call" meaning a call to an individual radio. My memory is you iniated the call by placing an "i" and then a 6 number identifier for the radio you wanted to call. Such as "i123456"

What am I missing here? When I try to enter an "i" in front of a UID in Sentinel I get an error "Over The Limit" and not valid.
Thanks

The "Individual Call" or "i call" was/is a neat feature of trunked radio systems, which does exactly like you describe. Other system radios could not always monitor the conversation, but scanners could (assuming no encryption involved). There are system administrators who were reluctant to activate the feature for fear of gobbling up system resources.

That tends to be the case, radios come with a great number of features that are not used. Either a concern that resources are drained or many users are not radio-savvy enough to use them.
