• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

All quiet in my area on the 151MHz MURS channels. Every Walmart* in my area (3 stores) uses MURS on 154.57 and 154.6. I always listen to them when I'm shopping at Walmart*.

Walmart* was previously using the Motorola XTN series radios, the XV2600. I noticed Walmart* replaced their radios with Motorola RMM series radios. The Motorola RMM2050 is the model I've seen the most.

I suspect Walmart* is Motorola's largest customer for the RMM series radios.

Hi,
I've been thinking of possibly getting a MURS radio. But exactly what type of radio traffic can be heard on MURS on the air now days? Is there any kind of activity and if so what kind? Is it personal communications or is it business or both or just what exactly? Is there very much activity or none at all?
Thanks

Business and personal type activity is allowed. Walmart* is probably the largest user of MURS nationwide.

As others have mentioned, keep an ear on all 5 MURS channels with a scanner to listen for activity in your area. If there is no Walmart* near your location, you may never hear a peep on any of the channels.

As for what MURS radio to get, consider the Motorola RMM series radios. They seem to be tough enough to survive a lot of use and abuse by Walmart* employees.

The rmm 2050 is exclusively Wal mart radio. The standard codeplug is available online.

I usually monitor MURS and FRS/GMRS at home and in the car. As is the case in other locations, I mostly hear Wal-Mart and Sam's Club on the MURS 154 channels. Minimal traffic heard on the 151 channels, save for the occasional driveway monitor or similar 'alert' device.

The Walmart near me uses both MURS and FRS. They really do not like it when other people start using "their" channel.

These would be a huge step up for my Wal-Mart, i am smack equal distance between two Wal-Mart's and the one is called ghetto Mart, it's that store that has junk radios , it's the only non "superstore" "super center" that i know of ,i go there just because they have foods that the other stores dont carry .
My bad its actually this one that is exclusively made for Wal Mart:
https://www.twowayradiocenter.com/motorola-rdm2070d/

It is fully compatible with the https://www.twowayradiocenter.com/motorola-rmm2050/ as well as almost any MURS programmed radios.

Note: Loss Prevention, Management, and some CSM use other Tones than the standard programmed ones.

Every now and then I hear children playing war or getting into arguments over childish crap ,it's usually late in the evening and constantly makes me wonder who though these radios are appropriate to give to children & why ? Sure when I was younger I had a CB handheld that i could talk to truckers on,but these are actual children not 16 or 17 and these are wholly not appropriate for there age group.

I've seen a lot of this sentiment since getting back into radio recently. Can anyone tell me where this comes from? Especially on this topic, which is an unlicensed band - you really don't get to complain about how it's used. If you don't like it, don't listen. If you're getting interference, maybe switch channels or set a CTCSS or DCS tone. Otherwise, why hate on children using radios?

I can't help but wonder if this is why there's such a pervasive feeling that the hobby is fading out over time. Shouldn't we be encouraging youth to take an interest, rather than the opposite?

Your point is well-taken but children laughing or arguing on the radio doesn't really sound like the kind of activity that would indicate an "interest" in radio. It sounds more like they're using one of the Christmas presents they got last year.

You would think for example their are over 6 Walmart's in Cumberland Co that they would have a radio system that could contact the other stores for i.e. shoplifters and other day to day events, I mean they do have the money. just saying

Why not monitor it for awhile and find out? MURS has endless uses and that use could change mile by mile. So any input from others would be pretty useless in your particular area.

Isn’t this why FRS was created? All the WALMART stores here use 154.57, & 154.60. Laughing kids belong on FRS.

Why is that? Granted FRS radios are usually less expensive, and MURS radios are not as readily available to the average consumer.
