There is a wideband digital signal from 3951 kHz to 3961 kHz that has been non stop for about an hour now.

As suggested, this is indeed DRM. Specifically this is probably the BBC out of Woofferton, England, as they have scheduled DRM activity on that frequency. The center freq should be 3955 kHz, and 10 kHz wide, from 3950 to 3960 kHz. I am not sure their complete schedule, however I have received it on that freq from about 0500 to 0600 UTC.

Interesting to know this. I was thinking of downloading DRM decode software to give that mode a try. A shame DRM isn't used in the United States.

For standard radios - desktops and portables - for DREAM (which is the software of choice) to work, you would need to tap the detector stage. In theory it's much like putting a discriminator tap in a scanner, but you need to be careful what point you tap. There are various files out there that describe the correct point to tap in many different radios.

SDRs are a different matter. There are a few that have DRM decoding as a native (built in) function (presumably using a version of the Fraunhofer decoder- the decoder on which DREAM is based- on a chip) but for others you would likely need to route the audio via apps like Virtual Audio Cable

Thanks. I was thinking along the lines of an SDR. I probably need to get better and more comprehensive software, as mine is VHF-UHF only. Been fascinated by DRM for quite a while now.

There aren't many DRM broadcasts directed to North America, but there are a few that come this way. The Master Spreadsheet, the World of Radio reflector on groups.io are but 2 places to find up to date DRM listings.

The Master Spreadsheet is available from the SWSkeds reflector on groups.io. It is a comprehensive gathering of numerous sources and compiled into a spreadsheet which is updated very frequently. Included in this is a file that is designed to feed a Perseus SDR but is importable into SDRUno (which is used by the RSP line of SDRs)…..Mike
