I'm currently in the market to find and purchase a new scanner of some sort. I have a few questions which i need answered in order to make a decision on which scanner is god for me.

Right now I only have a Uniden BC72XLT hand held scanner. It's not the greatest but it does the job.

I mainly listen to Sarnia EMS dispatches, because the Fire Rescue service is on a digital system. I was thinking that i may be able to listen to different sites around me.

any help as to what i would be able to listen to with an analog scanner would be appreciated.

once i know for sure what i will be able to listen to i will be asking for help as to what scanner would best suit my needs.

Im thinking either a base for home only, or a mobile trunk tracker, that i would be able to use in the car, or if i wanted, i could bring it inside also.

thanks in advance for the help and advise.

Hi !

I would think a Digital Scanner is in order!

With a Digi Scanner , it opens up a new world...and many users ( Police , Etc ) are moving to Digital...this way you will be ready , plus there is alot to listen to in P25 ( Digital ) right now...OPP , Etc..

Check Ebay or here for used radios , the guys here are pretty decent to deal with.

I agree with ZON, go digital. You'd be able to get Fleetnet (OPP,MTO,MNR,MOH) and being so close to Michigan, you'll get MPSCS in St Clair County

Some Uniden junkies have been rumouring the same thing since UPMan mentioned they may offer 'paid feature updates' to some of their newer radios. MotoTRBO in a scanner would be nice, since it is spreading fast around these parts. However, you can get TRBO with 'basic privacy' now (encryption) so it might be a moot point in some cases.

For someone in the Sarnia area, a P25 scanner would open up a whole new world. There is so much to listen to on MPSCS out of Michigan that you could just monitor that alone. However being able to properly monitor Fleetnet at the same time, as well as US Federal agencies (Border Patrol, DEA, FBI etc) makes things a lot more fun.

well i have been researching a couple different scanners. Uni BC-396T and Pro-106.

no im not totaly sure, but i think that the Pro-106 has a little bit , more options. How would you guys rate the BC-396T and the Pro-106 against each other? also, how it the reception on either of the two mentioned above compared to a base unit i could keep in the spare room with me?

im a fan of the 106 over the 396 but when it comes down to it there both good scanners just gota pick one :) i think being where you are the 106 may fit better as the rec is bit stronger if you lived in downtown Toronto then i would vote for the 396

I find the alpha tags way better on the 396.. for the coolness factor the 396 kicks ass
